Wednesday sat in the quad, the weight of the day pressing down on her. No matter how hard she tried, her mind kept drifting back to how Enid's words had cut her deep.
Wednesday felt an unfamiliar tightness in her chest, grief mingling with regret. She couldn’t even bring herself to focus in class.
Leaning back in her chair, she glanced around at the students around them.
Tyler sat across from her, clearly trying to think of the right thing to say. His brow furrowed as he finally broke the silence between them.
"I'm sorry for what happened," Tyler began, his voice tentative, unsure how Wednesday would respond.
Wednesday let out a sigh. "It was bound to happen anyway, and she was right." Her voice was flat, as though she had already resigned herself to the truth of Enid’s words.
Tyler frowned, shaking his head. "I didn’t expect her to snap at you like that. I thought...maybe you two could work it out."
Wednesday shifted uncomfortably, her mind still replaying the confrontation over and over. She couldn’t stop hearing Enid’s words, the tears in her eyes. It felt like her heart had been ripped out of her chest.
"I'm planning to move in with you," she said abruptly, breaking the heavy silence between them.
Tyler’s eyes widened in shock. "What?" he stammered, trying to process what she had just said. "You’re staying with me?"
Wednesday rolled her eyes in response.
"Don’t act like you haven’t stayed with me before," she said, her voice tinged with exasperation.
Tyler set his coffee down, still looking a little stunned.
"I just didn’t think you’d make that decision so quickly." His gaze softened, concern evident in his eyes. "Are you sure you want to do that?"
"She wanted me gone, Tyler," Wednesday replied, her tone emotionless, as if she had already made up her mind. "So why not give her what she wants?"
Tyler leaned forward slightly, concern deepening on his face. "But you can’t just give up on her, Wednesday. Not like this."
Wednesday stared at him, her eyes dark and guarded.
"I think it’s better if I stay away from her." The statement hung heavily between them, filled with the pain she refused to express out loud.
She couldn't bear to admit that part of her feared she had already lost Enid for good.
"And you’re okay with Ajax being her roommate?" Tyler asked, his tone skeptical.
"He’s her type, anyway," Wednesday replied with a bitter edge.
It was easier to pretend it didn’t matter, easier to focus on the practicalities than to confront the emotions clawing at her from the inside.
Tyler exhaled, leaning back in his chair with a sigh of frustration. His displeasure was written all over his face, but he didn’t press her further.
"She doesn’t want me in her life, Tyler," Wednesday continued after a long pause, her voice soft. "And I don’t think I can change that. I tried... and I failed. So, I apologize if my decision displeases you, but I give up."
Tyler watched her for a moment, his face clouded with disappointment. He hated seeing her like this, so distant, so defeated. But he knew better than to push Wednesday.
"I guess it's fine rooming with you," Tyler eventually said, though his tone was uncertain, as if he wasn’t fully on board with the idea. "But still, giving up doesn’t seem like you."
