Wednesday sat alone in her dorm room. She leaned back in her chair with a weary sigh, attempting once again to focus on the book open in her desk.
But the words on the page seemed to blur together, refusing to form coherent thoughts in her mind.
She glanced toward the door, half-expecting Enid to walk in. Her chest tightened as she realized how foolish it was to even think that. Enid had made her feelings painfully clear.
The door creaked open suddenly, snapping Wednesday out of her thoughts. She sat up, momentarily hopeful, but it was only Eugene entering with his usual energetic smile.
“Hi, Wednesday!” he greeted, setting his backpack on his bed.
“Hey,” she replied, her voice flat.
Eugene didn’t seem to notice, as he busied himself rummaging through his things. She glanced at him, grateful for his presence yet feeling strangely distant.
Shaking her head, she closed the book. There was no use pretending she could concentrate.
“Eugene,” she said as she stood, "I’m heading out for a bit.”
He looked up, slightly surprised but quickly nodded.
“Sure thing! Take it easy, okay?”
With a brief nod, Wednesday left the dorm, the door clicking shut behind her. She had barely taken a few steps down the hall when she heard someone call her name.
“Wednesday.”
She turned to find Tyler approaching, hands shoved into his pockets, his gaze flicking briefly to the door she’d just exited before landing back on her.
“How’s your new roommate?” he asked, a playful smirk tugging at his lips.
“He’s... fine, I suppose,” Wednesday replied, not entirely in the mood for small talk. “Why are you here anyway?”
Tyler shrugged as they began to walk side by side down the corridor.
“Just checking on you. After everything that happened with Enid… I figured you might need some company.”
Wednesday rolled her eyes. “I’m fine. At least, for now.”
“If you say so.” Tyler shot her a sideways glance, a hint of worry behind his smirk. “Anyway, thank God it’s the weekend. No assignments for two whole days.”
“Or maybe you’re just lazy,” Wednesday retorted. “We actually do have schoolwork. I assume you just plan on ignoring it.”
“Easy for you to say, smartass,” Tyler replied with a grin, shaking his head.
They reached the quad just in time to notice a large crowd gathering near the center.
They exchanged a quick look before heading over to see what was going on.
As they pushed through the crowd, Wednesday’s gaze locked onto the source of the commotion.
Xavier was shoving Enid, his tall frame towering over her, while Yoko and Divina tried to pull him back. Enid’s expression was one of fierce determination, her blue eyes blazing with anger.
Tyler’s eyes went wide. “Holy shit,” he muttered, glancing at Wednesday. “I think you should help her.”
Wednesday simply folded her arms, watching the scene with a neutral expression. “She can handle herself.”
She kept her gaze fixed on Enid, admiring the strength in the way she held herself. For a moment, Wednesday caught a glimpse of the Enid she’d always known—that resilient, fierce and unyielding presence she showed.
