Enid sat with her friends in the quad, their laughter and chatter filling the air, but her mind was somewhere else.

She couldn’t shake the strange feeling that something was wrong. Wednesday hadn’t been in class earlier, which was unusual.

Wednesday never missed a class unless something serious was going on. Since their breakup, it felt like every small disruption in Wednesday’s routine was a red flag Enid couldn’t ignore.

She was snapped out of her thoughts by a familiar arm sliding around her waist, pulling her gently to the side. Damon’s warm voice filled her ear.

“You look beautiful today.”

Enid turned to him with a soft smile. “Thank you.”

He settled in next to her, his hand lingering on her back, and she leaned slightly into him, feeling the comfort of his presence. But she still felt a little distracted.

Yoko, rolling her eyes, shook her head dramatically.

“Seriously, you two. Get a room or something. This is painful.”

Enid laughed, nudging Yoko playfully.

“Like you’re one to talk,” she teased, glancing pointedly at Yoko and Divina, who were huddled close, laughing about something together.

“Hey, we’re at least subtle,” Yoko said with a smirk.

Divina joined in, grinning. “Barely, but yeah. We’re practically saints compared to you lovebirds.”

Enid rolled her eyes but couldn’t hide her smile. Across from them, Bianca sighed exaggeratedly, dramatically tossing her head back.

“Ugh, I really need to find someone. Between the two of you, I feel like the last single person on earth.”

Kent snickered, patting Bianca’s shoulder. “That’s because you are. Embrace it, queen.”

She shot him a deadly glare, punching his arm. “Thanks for the reminder, Kent. Really. I’ll make sure to add that to my list of reasons to hex you later.”

Kent chuckled, rubbing his arm as if he’d been truly injured. “Totally worth it.”

A quiet pause settled over them as Divina tapped her chin, looking pensive.

“It is weird, though. Wednesday never skips. Ever. And she wasn’t in class today.”

The casual comment brought Enid’s thoughts crashing back. She glanced down, trying to hide her concern.

She’d been wondering the same thing all morning, but saying it out loud made her more worried.

Damon, who had been watching her, picked up on the tension in her face.

He tilted his head, curiosity in his eyes. “Wednesday… That’s your ex, right?”

Enid shifted a bit, feeling everyone’s gaze on her now.

“Yeah,” she answered softly, almost feeling a pang in her chest as she admitted it.

She glanced up to see her friends exchanging glances.

Bianca sighed, crossing her arms. “Skipping class doesn’t feel like Wednesday at all. It’s actually kind of suspicious.”

“Maybe she’s just finally letting loose for once,” Yoko suggested, but her tone sounded half-hearted, as if she didn’t believe it herself.

“Or maybe…” Kent started, looking pointedly at Enid. “You’re the reason.”

Enid’s eyes flashed with warning as she glared at him.
