Enid had just finished working on her assignment, the soft scratching of her pen against paper is the only sound breaking the silence in their shared dorm room.
The dim glow of her desk lamp glistened on the walls, but her attention wasn't on her work anymore.
She let out a small sigh, glancing over at Wednesday, who sat across the room, absorbed in a thick, leather-bound book.
Wednesday's face was impassive, her dark eyes scanning the pages with an intensity that made it seem like the outside world didn't exist.
Enid watched her for a moment, her heart swelling with a affection and frustration. For all of Wednesday's quirks Enid had fallen for her, deeply. But lately, there was a growing distance between them, one that Enid could no longer ignore.
With a small smile, she pushed back from her desk and quietly crossed the room, her footsteps soft against the wooden floor.
She wrapped her arms around Wednesday from behind, resting her chin on her shoulder as she embraced her girlfriend in what she hoped would be a comforting gesture.
But Wednesday tensed immediately, her body stiffening under Enid's touch.
"Not right now, Enid," she said, her voice cool and detached as she shrugged out of the hug.
Enid froze for a second, the rejection stinging more than she expected. She let her arms drop to her sides, pulling away and stepping back.
"Someone's grumpy," she mumbled, trying to mask the hurt in her voice with forced lightness.
She turned and walked over to her bed, plopping down on the edge with a small pout, hoping Wednesday might at least glance her way.
But Wednesday didn't. She didn't even look up from her book, her attention unwavering.
"I'm reading, Enid," she said, her tone flat, as though that explained everything.
Enid crossed her arms, biting her lip to keep the frustration from boiling over.
"I know that," she replied, her voice tinged with irritation. "But it wouldn't kill you to take a break for five seconds."
Wednesday's response was immediate, cutting, and emotionless. "Then stop being annoying."
Enid blinked, her heart sinking at the sudden harshness in Wednesday's voice. She stared at her girlfriend in disbelief, the words hanging in the air like an open wound.
For a moment, the room was quiet, save for the faint rustle of pages as Wednesday continued reading, as if nothing had happened.
But something had happened. And Enid could no longer keep silent.
With a scoff, Enid shook her head in disbelief, her chest tightening with frustration and hurt.
"I've been trying so hard to keep this relationship alive, Wednesday," she began, her voice trembling but steady. "I kept my distance because I know you don't like physical touch. I've tried so hard to respect your boundaries, even when it's hard for me, because I know you hate it. I've been patient. I've given you space, I've given you time, even when you push me away, I still try. Every single time."
She paused, her voice cracking slightly as her emotions began to spill out.
"And I do it all because I love you, Wednesday. Because I care about you."
Wednesday finally looked up from her book, her dark eyes locking onto Enid's with that familiar, unfeeling gaze that made Enid feel like she was speaking to a wall.
