It was a familiar sight once more as Kassia approached the arena, her eyes drawn to the clash of swords between Ares and Athena. The ring of steel against steel echoed through the air, each strike precise and deliberate.Ares and Athena—forever rivals—embodied opposing sides of warfare.Ares, the raw and brutal force of conflict, and Athena, the strategic and calculated wisdom of battle.Despite their differences, they shared a mastery of combat unmatched by any.
Ares had never known defeat on the battlefield, nor had Athena—and neither, for that matter, had Kassia.Yet,Kassia’s wars were often among the gods and divine creatures, far removed from the struggles of mortals, making comparisons unfair.
As the clang of their blades filled the space,Kassia gently set Kaelis down on a stone bench and took her seat beside him,her gaze momentarily drifting between her son and the fierce contest before them. Both Athena and Ares were so engrossed in their sparring,so focused on their every move, that they had not noticed her presence.
“Mama,”Kaelis’s small voice broke the stillness, his eyes wide with curiosity, “why do they fight?.”
Kassia smiled softly at his innocent question. “They’re not fighting,my love. They are training.”
“For what?.”He asked,his curiosity undeterred.
“To ensure they remain the best,”Kassia answered, her voice gentle but honest. “Because those who fall behind shall be forgotten.”
Kaelis tilted his head, his brow furrowing as he considered her words.Kassia, watching him, knew that he was too young to fully understand the weight of the truth she had spoken. In the world of gods and titans and monsters and all, being the best was not a choice—it was a necessity. Those who could not keep up,those who faltered, risked being left behind in the shadows of history.
Be the best, great is not good enough.
But for now,Kaelis had no need to concern himself with such burdens and frankly,Kassia did not think that her son will not be able to make a name for himself.
As Ares and Athena continued their relentless exchange of blows,Kassia’s mind drifted to her own battles—those fought long ago and those yet to come. There was always another conflict, another test of strength and wit.But for now,she allowed herself the luxury of simply watching, her son nestled beside her,his innocent gaze fixed on the gods who clashed before him.
Ares fell to the ground with a loud thump, the impact resounding through the arena as Athena expertly aimed her spear at his forehead, the tip hovering dangerously close to breaking the skin. “You lost,” Athena remarked coolly,a triumphant smile playing on her lips.Ares huffed in response, his frustration palpable.
Without warning, and without so much as a greeting,Kaelis erupted into cheerful applause, his tiny hands clapping together with unrestrained enthusiasm. “You win!!.” he shouted, his voice bright and joyful, filling the arena with a sense of delight.
