“Mother.”Kassia’s voice trembled as she looked up,her eyes wide with a mixture of surprise and fear and hurt. Her hand cradled her bruised cheek, trying to soothe the throbbing pain from her mother’s assault. “That… that hurt, Mother.”
Themis’s eyes darkened with fury. “Ungrateful little brat.” Her hand shot out again, seizing Kassia’s face in an iron grip. “You vanish for a decade without a word, and now you dare return expecting everything to be well? How dare you!.” Her nails dug into Kassia’s skin, pulling her down to her knees.
Kassia gasped as the pain intensified, helplessly kneeling before her mother. "I... I had my reasons..." she stammered, her body trembling. "Please,Mother—"
Before she could finish,Athena stepped forward, her movements swift and deliberate. She grabbed Themis’s wrist and yanked her away from Kassia. “Enough,” Athena’s voice was sharp, seething with restrained anger. “You will not touch her again.”
Themis turned, glaring at Athena, her nostrils flaring. “She is my daughter,Athena.Any misjudgments she’s made are mine to correct.”
“She is a grown woman,a married woman,Themis,”Athena shot back positioning herself between Kassia and her enraged mother. “You have no right to treat her this way.None.”
Behind Athena,Kassia’s mind swirled in chaos. She knelt on the floor, trembling, feeling utterly helpless. She was the goddess of protection, yet she couldn’t even protect herself from her own mother. The humiliation and pain tore through her,but worse than that—an unnatural dread began to creep into her heart.
It felt heavy and suffocating, far too powerful for the situation at hand.It was a fear she hadn’t felt since the bloodiest battles she had fought, the kind of dread that came when lives were senselessly lost.
But it wasn’t hers.
It was coming from inside her.
Kassia’s hand instinctively flew to her stomach, cradling her womb. Her breath caught in her throat. “Shh… it’s alright,my love.Mama’s here,” she whispered, her voice trembling as she tried to calm the baby stirring within her.The child's distress matched her own,and it frightened her more than her mother's wrath.
Tears spilled down her cheeks, mingling with the pain and confusion. She pressed her palm harder against her stomach, trying to quiet the waves of anguish. She felt humiliated, angry, frustrated and mostly, sad. She have been looking forward to met her mother, she missed her so much.
She longed for her,a daughter missing her mother.
But then she felt it—a hand on her swollen cheek, soft yet radiating with a strange energy.
Kassia looked up,gasping when she saw her son standing before her.His eyes—normally so bright gold—were now pitch black, swirling with darkness. "Kaelis..." Her voice broke as she touched his side gently, her fingers trembling. “Sweetheart, calm down. It’s alright.”
