Sometimes all you need is someone by your side. To have a person to hug you and whisper in your ear that everything is okay, that everything will work out soon. Someone to tell you that not everything is perfect and that's exactly why the world is beautiful in its shades. A person to listen to you, to let you talk and who doesn't judge you. And you had that person.
The relationship that you and Spencer had could very well have been described as 'different'. Different meaning that everything was new, the little things praised and the difficulties ignored. Why? Because it was the first time for both of you.
It was born from stolen glances while you were working and a date arranged for you by a colleague since neither of you had the courage to do so.
"You two loverbirds are killing me over here," blurted out Derek one day, rolling his eyes and his hands on the arms of his chair to help him up, "I'm tired"
Spencer had arrived at the office shortly before, two coffees in hand. You were filling out a file when out of the corner of your eye you saw him, well, you saw a figure next to you.
"Y/N" he called you. You looked up at him, his eyes instead everywhere but on you. "I brought you this" he said, extending an arm and handing you the paper cup.
You clutched the still-warm coffee and a smile appeared on your face. "Thank you"
It had become a habitual thing now, him bringing you coffee in the early morning or you giving him a bottle of water during breaks. Smiles exchanged and fingers accidentally touching. It was obvious that you both felt something. You had heart eyes every time you saw him and Spencer's germaphobic being magically disappeared when it came to you.
The whole team noticed, and Derek couldn't hold back a minute longer. So when you heard him speak that morning you both jumped in your seats, startled and amazed that you were not alone. It was always like that for you, too focused on each other to notice the world around you.
"Pretty boy, pretty girl," the man beckoned after you, "You're going out tonight. Go to the movies or a restaurant I don't care, just go out. I can't take it with you any more"
He walked away shaking his head, muttering something to himself. Both of you lowered your heads, blushing visibly. You stayed like that for a while, until the boy in front of you cleared his throat, desperately trying to end the awkwardness enveloping you. You looked at each other again. "Cinema?" you both exhaled simultaneously, painting your cheeks red again.
You nodded and the same thing did he before raising a hand in greeting and silently leaving. Needless to say, that night's movie became your favorite.
From that day on, nothing stopped you from showing your affection for each other. During cases, when you had to share a room with some other colleague, you always found a way to feel each other close. Spencer would knock on the door of the room where you were staying, and maybe you weren't even the one to open it for him but Emily. He would stand there, shamelessly, with a sweatshirt and a pair of his own pants in hand for you. He would just prepare at least one more outfit in his go-bag at all times, knowing that you would somehow end up in one.
Thanks to him you understood what it meant to be loved, and for the first time he knew why people say you can feel at home in someone's arms. You had become his comfort zone and he was yours. You planned aimless trips, went out at night with no way to get home, and when he stayed over, you woke up in his arms feeling like a millionaire.
When a case was too hard, when you felt the whole weight of the world on your shoulders you would find yourself in his living room wrapped in each other's arms, his chin resting on your head. You sometimes cried, and he did not understand how an angel like you could blame herself for a world in which you had no power in, and so he kissed you on the forehead. "The best of the world in the palm of our hands" was what he repeated to you like a mantra, holding you tighter to himself.
You were perfect for each other and there was only love between you and that is why when you had to leave and go to another state for a specific training course you had been taken for, it hurt.
"I'm happy for you" Spencer outed to you in front of the airport check-in, voice full of sincerity.
"I know," you said, "And that's one of the reasons I love you"
"I love you too" he kissed you. "It's only two years, I'll wait for you here" he informed you.
You smiled. "And I'll come back to you"
"I know," he said, "And that's one of the reasons I love you"
For the following first few months you were committed to talking daily and calling each other every weekend but then you discovered that the two years would turn into five and, because of both of your busy schedules, the many texts and calls lessened and lessened until they vanished completely.
Even though the contacts were none, the love you felt for each other was still strong. Occasionally you both would see pictures on social media of the other and so a like and a smile would appear for both of you.
After what seemed like a lifetime, when the course was over, Hotch contacted you, asking if you wanted your place again. You didn't hesitate to leave to return to Quantico, heart racing and head spinning.
You had asked your again-boss not to tell the others you were coming back so you could surprise them.
"Hi" you entered the room smiling after Hotch announced the arrival of a new agent, your eyes immediately searching for Spencer.
"Angel" the man whispered standing up, rushing to hug you. "I missed you"
"And I missed you, too" you confessed, tears streaming down your face. "You look good, handsome"
He brought a hand behind your neck as he wiped your cheeks with his thumb. "You look beautiful" he told you, ignoring your compliment.
You hadn't felt this happy since that day, a feeling you didn't know how it had ended but now it was back. Only he brought you joy and you knew it. Because breaking up and being reckless and young is not how the damage gets done.
In that moment, once again, it was as if you were alone in the world despite the people around you. "How is it going?" you asked, warm in your voice.
"I've waited for you here," he said, body and soul filled with hope, "And how is it going for you?"
You took his cheeks and kissed him, your tears and his face just as the sea and the shore became one thing. You smiled again, nodding at the memory of an old promise. "I came back to you"
