You had been dancing around each other for weeks. Ever since you and Derek started going out, there was this playful back-and-forth that seemed to sneak into every day at work. Light touches, lingering looks, the occasional brush of fingers as you passed him a file in the conference room — each interaction seemed to promise something just out of reach.
Today was no different. In the kitchenette, you poured yourself a fresh cup of coffee, then paused, grinning to yourself as you filled a second one for him. You could feel him behind you even before he stepped closer. His familiar warmth and that lingering scent of his cologne gave him away every time, and you didn't mind one bit.
Turning to face him, you held out his cup, unable to hide your smile. "Coffee?"
Derek didn't reach for the object. Instead, his eyes stayed on you, a little more intense than usual, catching you off guard. You chuckled nervously, raising an eyebrow.
"What?" you asked, your smile growing at the way he was studying you.
He didn't answer immediately, just cocked his head to the side as if trying to decide something. Then he leaned in, his face so close to yours that you could feel the warmth radiating from him. "Would you kiss me?"
His question landed like a spark in the quiet space, and your heart skipped. "What?" you managed, blinking in surprise, unable to keep the slight shock from your voice.
Derek smirked, but his eyes didn't stray from yours. "You heard me, pretty girl. Would you kiss me?" His tone was soft, almost challenging, and there was a hint of mischief in his expression that you couldn't resist.
You tilted your head, trying to match his easygoing charm even though your heart was pounding. "Yeah. Yeah, I would". Your answer came out surprisingly steady, and you held his gaze. "What about you? Would you kiss me?"
He scoffed, a grin spreading across his face as he crossed his arms. "Would I kiss you?" he shook his head, his voice playful, laced with that familiar teasing. "Baby, I'd walk through fire, cross oceans, do a hundred push-ups, all just for one kiss"
You couldn't help the soft laugh that bubbled up at his words, the flirtatious exaggeration making your cheeks warm. Then, in a smooth movement, you placed both steaming cups on the counter beside you, your hand lingering there as you looked up at him.
"Well," you said, keeping your voice low, "Then kiss me"
For a moment, he didn't move, his dark eyes flicking between yours as if memorizing every detail. Then, his hand came to rest on your waist, gentle yet grounding, his touch making your breath hitch as he closed the last inch of distance between you.
The kiss was soft at first, a gentle press of lips that seemed almost too delicate for the weeks of anticipation that had been building between you. But then he deepened it, his hand sliding up your back as he pulled you closer, his lips warm and sure, making you feel like you were the only person in the world.
When he pulled back, he didn't go far, his forehead brushing yours as he laughed softly. "Damn" he whispered, his voice a low, pleased rumble. "I should've asked you that a long time ago"
You grinned, catching your breath, feeling a little light-headed. "Well, better late than never, right?"
"Better believe it" he pulled back slightly, his eyes still dancing with that familiar spark. "So, since you obviously can't resist me, what's next? You gonna sweep me off my feet or what?"
Laughing, you nudged his shoulder playfully. "Keep dreaming, Morgan"
He chuckled, reaching for his coffee at last, his fingers brushing yours as he took the cup. "Oh, I'm just getting started". With a wink, he took a sip, his eyes never leaving yours.
You both knew this was only the beginning, but for now, it was enough.
