There you were, sitting on the sofa, telling each other your most painful memories.
"I," you started, "Remember that day like it was yesterday. I was on his bed, we were arguing as always. There was silence for a moment, tears already on the verge of falling. I looked down and then said 'Tell me something I don't know'. It was our usual pastime, a quick game of some sort to give each other weird facts and trivia, after school or in his car on our way home. 'I don't love you anymore' he told me"
You took a quick glance at him, expecting him to be scared or sick about your story, but instead, he just had this sad smile in his eyes.
"What did you respond to that?"
You sipped on your wine. "'Tell me something I don't know'" I said again.
"I'm sorry you had to go through that"
"It's okay," you sighed, "It just felt right for a moment, you know? His not being loyal, all the manipulation, his 'Getting sick of me' every once in a while. It hurt me. Yet he looked good while scanning me, with his pretty face and flowers when I would decide to go away. But at some point, I had to realize a devil wrapped in silk was still a devil"
There wasn't a beat missed as he leaned forward, reaching your hand and putting his on top of yours. It felt like you had to play it safe, almost as if with every move everything you had could just disappear.
"I don't really expect anything soon" he confessed, "We are building our something on shaky ground and as far as I'm aware of it, it's scary"
You smiled at his vulnerability, which he only reserved to show in the privacy of your being. "I know Aaron"
"We just have to keep it slow, I guess?"
"Yeah. Maybe set some boundaries"
He squeezed your hand. "That would be nice. I want you to be comfortable"
"I want you to be comfortable too, handsome"
So there you were, sitting on the sofa, hearts on your sleeves.
It was good to have someone to lean on once again.
