[An alternate ending to 'The Proposal'! This is for the angst lovers out there, thanks to one of my regular readers for the idea! <3]

"...No. Rodger, I can't... I can't do this."

Rodger looked up at the golden toon before him. He'd planned this all out, he'd done his best. Rodger blinked, feeling tears well in his eye. Was he hearing right?

"What?" Rodger mumbled, confused. His heart shattered as he watched tears roll down Glisten's face. Glisten looked at the ring in the box, then back at Rodger. They were both upset, it was obvious.

"I can't marry you, Rodger. I'm sorry." Glisten shook his head, "I just... I just can't commit like that. Knowing that things could change at any moment, that..."

Glisten trailed off. Rodger watched in silence. His chest ached, his heart shattered. He closed the box, the ring inside now lacking a purpose. Rodger slipped it back into his pocket, knowing it was too late to return it.

"Let's get home, before we talk about anything else." Rodger suggested. Glisten nodded, and they began to walk alongside eachother. As they walked, Glisten reached for Rodger's hand, but the detective didn't let him take it. Glisten didn't dare to try again.

They arrived back at Gardenview soon enough. Glisten followed Rodger to his room, and they shut the door. Glisten remained standing, as Rodger sat at his desk, head in his hands. Rodger couldn't help the sobs that escaped him.

"So that's it, then? I don't think we can get past this..."

Glisten felt shame bubble across his chest, fear and guilt freezing him in place. He loved Rodger, he didn't want to lose him, but he didn't want to be married. Glisten stepped forward, about to protest, but he stopped. They wanted different things, and settling wouldn't do them good.

"I... I suppose. I still love you, Rodger. I'm sorry, I'm sorry I never told you. I-"

"Don't. We want different things. Just... Just take care of yourself. Goodnight, Glisten."

Rodger turned away from Glisten, pointing to the door. Glisten stood there, just for a second longer, before he nodded. He left the room. It all felt so sudden, losing what they had. Glisten couldn't help but break down into sobs the second he got back to his room. Rodger was doing the same.

They loved eachother, but they wanted something else. It would be for the best... At least, they both hoped so.
