2011
"She's done it again." Evan throws the resignation letter on his kitchen table in frustration.
Jared reaches over and picks it up to read the written words, his eyebrows raised with surprise. "Mrs. Joneston couldn't even handle her huh?"
"This is such bullshit!" Evan stands up and begins pacing back and forth not knowing what he was going to do. "This is the third babysitter she's scared off within six months! What am I supposed to do when she constantly finds ways to get rid the one thing I need to take care of Shasta?"
"Mila's offered you know." Jared informs him throwing the paper back on the table.
His shoulders deflate. "I'm not going to ask her to do that. She just had Cale, whose barely a month old. She has her hands full already."
"He's not that much of a handful. He's a very quiet and mellow baby to be honest." Jared frowns at that remembering the time when Shasta was a baby and how much she cried constantly.
"That's because he's still in the newborn stage. Wait until he's a few months older." He goes to sit back down with a plop looking hopeless.
"What was it this time that she found so wrong with her? The woman was like seventy years old."
Evan barks out a laugh that wasn't humorous at all. "She was only in her late fifties and according to Kristan," The name sounded bitter on his tongue, "She didn't like the way she was teaching Shasta how to be a proper lady. Like what the fuck?"
"Seriously? Coming from her that's rich." Jared scoffs, remembering all the times that Kristan tried to butt her way in between him and Mila when they announced their relationship to the family.
For months afterwards she did everything she could to come between them. Not caring they were engaged and pregnant with their son Cale. She's tried everything. Continuing to try and get him to attend events and outings with just her and Shasta, finding ways to show up at his work with lunch and getting to know his coworkers, she even showed up to his house when Mila wasn't home, going shopping with her mother for baby clothes and Kristan had tried to get him into bed with her.
It was a trying time for him and Mila and thank God she knew how her cousin was from over the years that she wasn't mistrusting him when it came to the outlandish things Kristan would do. It wasn't until Cale was born that she finally backed off. Hell their wedding wasn't even enough to get her to stop but once she saw his son in Mila's arms, something had clicked in her brain finally and she hasn't done anything since.
He didn't know what had happened, but he was thankful for it. But now she was sabotaging Evan's way of life.
"At this rate I'll be lucky to find anyone who is willing to deal with her shit. No one could get paid enough to stay and it isn't like I could give them my entire fortune to do just that." He sounded defeated.
"You realize what she's trying to do don't you?" Jared asks.
"I know what she's trying to do." He growls. "She's trying to make it like I'm not capable to keep a single babysitter for more than three months so I would look bad in court. She wants it to where our daughter has to stay with her more often in the year, so I would be forced to pay her more child support. Thank God she doesn't work otherwise taxes would be a bitch."
"How does Shasta feel about it?"
"She just turned six, she doesn't know how she feels right now. All she knows is she hates going to her mother's house. She's cries every single time wanting to stay with me or you. If it wasn't for Kristan's mom her life would be a living hell at that house."
"So what are you going to do?" Jared asks as he checks his phone that lit up right then.
"I'll have to find another babysitter and pray this one has more of a backbone than all the others combined."
"Why don't you hire a male babysitter?"
"I have. He didn't last two weeks because I found him sticking his dick in Kristan's twat in my bedroom while Shasta was down for a nap."
"Holy shit." Jared states in shock, which shouldn't be shocking at all.
"Yep. Fired him as he was humping the shit out of her and made his ass leave butt naked. Didn't give him the chance to put his clothes on I was that pissed off. I don't know what the hell she was trying to accomplish but I was more upset that they were doing that shit while my daughter was sleeping in the other room."
He leans forward looking him dead in the eye when he says, "They had the fucking door open, Jared. She could have woken up and saw that shit."
"Thank goodness she didn't."
Leaning back he rubs his temples feeling the heavy stress on his shoulders. "She didn't even apologize. She smiled and went on her merry way as if her whoring herself out wasn't an issue at all. She barely met the guy that same day, like what the fuck was she thinking?"
They go into silence for a few moments, both lost in their own thoughts. Jared's phone lights up again. He reads the text and sends one right back.
"Mila?" Evan asks, sometimes wishing he had never screwed that up when they were teenagers. But then he wouldn't have Shasta and Jared wouldn't be as happy as he was now, with Cale not existing at all. Things worked out better in the end he suppose.
"Yeah, she's sending me pictures of Cale sleeping. She's obsessed with him." He smiles big, looking extremely hopelessly in love.
"Like you aren't? The storage in your phone is maxed out with nothing but pictures of the two of them. You know you have more members in your family than just them two right?" He jokes.
Jared cracks a grin. "Yeah but they're the only two who are more important to me than anybody else in the world."
"Ouch, that hurts." Evan places a hand over his chest as if he was in pain.
"Shut up, you know I love you too."
"But not as much as you love them. I get it." He raises his hands in surrender.
"So, what are you going to do now?" Jared asks again.
He sighs deeply. "I'm going to put out an advertisement again and this time hope whoever applies and qualifies will stick for good."
