Magical Beasts

I dashed down the stone corridors of the castle, doing my best not to crash into any of the other students as I passed them. I barely caught Leander's humored gaze or Garreth's confused and concerned one, but I bolted through the Transfiguration courtyard and headed towards the Greenhouses, hoping that getting to that class would be my reprieve from those sneaky Slytherins trying to catch me. They either gave up, or they conceded to the fact that they wouldn't be getting answers from me yet as they saw me nearing the Greenhouse section of the castle. I slowed my pace so that I wouldn't just burst through the doors; I didn't want to cause too much of a scene, as if I hadn't done so the whole way here, running about the castle. I quickly sat in my seat beside my assigned potting table, avoiding the gaze of the brunette Scot next to me the best I could, as I gave a sigh of relief when Professor Garlick came strolling down the staircase, ready to address the class.

The class drug on, but I was honestly grateful for the reprieve and near-relaxation offered by this class. I was still reeling from the trial, and had the conversation with Professor Sharp on a loop within my mind; hearing about his adventures as an Auror, how he lost his partner and was obviously still mourning a bit over it, the fact that, eventually, we'd be leaving Hogwarts and I'd have to choose a job...it was a lot to mull over. I focused on the Chomping Cabbages we were meant to transfer to a nearby Greenhouse, the very one Leander had taken me to once, and Adelaide was almost bitten by one. Professor Garlick cautioned her, but she was very hesitant to even approach the cabbage. I'm sure it sensed her hesitation, maybe that's why it thought it could get away with taking a small chomp at her fingertips, but Adelaide had promptly dropped the cabbage and dashed out the doors of the classroom. I couldn't help the tiniest chuckle that escaped me; I liked Adelaide, but the girl needed to grow a bit more of a spine.

I picked up her discarded cabbage and tossed it towards the wooden dummy, it more than happily chomping away at the wooded wizard. Professor Garlick thanked me and then proceeded to show me how to modify 'Aguamenti' into a showering rain so that I could, lightly, water my plant. The Dittany I'd nearly forgotten about perked up immediately, and I was grateful for the tip and the help from the professor. It was a basic class today, really just tending to our own pots and the mini garden surrounding the glass walls of the room. Sebastian tried talking to me a couple times, but I really didn't want to chat. I could tell he was hurt by it, and while I felt bad, I honestly didn't know what to say quite yet. And, it wasn't even a direct hurt by him, I knew it wasn't his fault that Ominis snapped at me; after all, he said that he would tell him, and it wasn't his fault that Ominis chose that exact moment to come to the Undercroft. It was their place. His place originally, it only made sense for him to come there because it was his normal.

Professor Garlick dismissed the class, but I walked over to her, knowing that she'd want to teach me that spell, 'Wingardium Leviosa' I think it was? "Hello my dear, always pleasant to see you, and to know that you're doing so well. Professor Hecate told me that she taught you 'Levioso', so you should be ready to learn a more advanced levitating charm: 'Wingardium Leviosa'. It requires a bit more concentration than its predecessor, along with a nice, graceful wand movement. Let's see you try your hand at it," she said, gesturing for me to watch her and mimic the spell afterwards. "When it's executed correctly, you should be able to pick up boulders as though they were only sprigs of Sneezewort," she quickly added as I moved my wand in a 'swish and flick' sort of motion. She told me that she had laid out some different crates throughout this Greenhouse and the one next to it, each of them with various things to retrieve underneath them. She told me that I needed to use the spell in order to retrieve each of the things.

I ended up with 3 Wiggenweld potions, nearly 300 galleons, an Edurus potion, and a couple chomping cabbages that were patiently waiting beneath the crates I needed to lift. I quite liked this spell, wondering what kind of Merlin trials there may be that may need this sort of spell in order to complete them. I thanked her, even asking if I was supposed to keep what I'd found, and I only received a sly smirk in reply from the red-haired professor as I walked out of the Greenhouses and headed towards my magical beasts class. I was so excited that I nearly sprinted again, coming out into the front law as I sped walked towards the little hut I'd found during my first week at Hogwarts. I wondered what kind of beasts I'd encounter, if any that I'd read about in my free time would be more rare or if they were quite common in the Scottish Highlands. The only beast I was slightly wary of were dragons, for obvious reasons, and something called a 'Runespoor'. I didn't know if I preferred dragons over them, for I'd only encountered one, but it was fascinating to know that each head of the snake had their own personality and purpose.
