Thomas POV
I got so nervous about her reply that I just stood there in the middle of the airport. "Thomas!" A familiar voice shouted from a distance. It was my sister Angela, together with my whole family. My mom and dad both came rushing to hug me.
"We've missed you so much!" said my mom when she finally released me from her bear hug.
"We're so glad to see you back home," said my dad.
"I'm so glad to be back," I said with less enthusiasm than everyone, and it seemed like my mom could pick up on it.
"I know you would have wanted to stay, but the important thing is you're here at home with us," she said. I smiled at that statement, but it was a fake smile because I was just getting comfortable in America.
We went into my mom and dad's car without me saying a single thing throughout the whole trip back home. I walked into the house, and out of nowhere, a bunch of people yelled, "Surprise!" Shortly after that, loud music began to play. The people were mostly the neighbors and a couple of my relatives. We partied almost up to midnight, when I finally got some alone time.
I found my way to my room, which wasn't very far from the living room, through a small passage with walls of peeled white paint. When I got to my room, I took out my phone to check my Instagram, and I saw my DM with a message from Max saying, "It's boring in the room."
I loved my home here in Zambia, but it didn't mean I would have wanted to return so quickly and suddenly, even if it was just unrealistic. I tried checking if Ava had at least read my message, and by some stroke of luck, she did read it, but she hadn't replied. So, I decided to wait thirty minutes, which turned into an hour, which turned into two hours. There was still nothing from her.
I waited ten minutes before I went to bed. The next morning, I was woken up by my mom, who kept screaming at me about not waking up early. I checked the time, and it was 11:30 AM.
I got up and went to the kitchen to get some breakfast. Our kitchen wasn't all that big; the best it could do was keep a fridge and stove and a small kitchen counter, and the tiles on the floor were mostly broken or cracked, so the tiles don't really cover up much.
I got two slices of bread and some leftover tea. Halfway through my breakfast, Mom came into the room. "Thomas, can you come to the living room?" she asked.
"Okay, I'll be there soon," I replied.
"Now, it's urgent," she added.
I had to stop eating and start off to the living room, following my mom behind her. When I entered the living room, I saw my dad sitting on his favorite seat, while my mom took a wooden chair next to him in the middle of the room. There was a stool right in the middle, which I assumed was my seat. I quickly took it and faced my parents.
My dad broke the silence by saying, "Thomas, we wanted to have a chat about the way forward." He paused, then continued, "After the unfortunate events of the Harvard situation, we need to find you a new and affordable school. So, any ideas?"
I never really gave much thought to going to a new university since I knew I was leaving Harvard. "Maybe we take you to Copperbelt University," my mom suggested. "What do you think, Thomas?"
Copperbelt University is a pretty good school, but it pains me to think about moving on from relationships I was building in America with Ava and Max.
"I think... we should just wait a couple of days, then we have this conversation again," I replied.
My parents looked at each other and then turned to face me. Then my dad asked, "Why?"
"I just got out of a school, and I'm not emotionally ready to jump into a new one," I explained.
"You need to go to a new school now!" my mom shouted.
"But don't I need just like a month to clear my mind, then I go again?" I asked.
Suddenly, my dad got up. "A month! Are you crazy? You want to be behind on your studies?" I kept quiet because I knew that my dad had snapped.
"You are going to Copperbelt University as soon as we get the acceptance letter, and you are not going there any later than next week," he said, then stormed out of the room with my mom in a half-jog behind him, trying to catch up.
I was left there thinking to myself, "If only I could have remained at Harvard."
It's nighttime, and I lay on my bed thinking about a million different thoughts, like how Max and I were joking around at this time or maybe I could have managed to befriend Emilia or maybe I could've met Ava Wilder on a random street but I need to put those thoughts away because I'm never going to see them again and I have to accept that to stop my overthinking I decide to use my phone I open Instagram and the first thing I see is Ava Wilder and the up and coming Christopher Mathews at a NBA game sitting quite close to to each other their smiling and giggling at each other and their almost always touching each other almost suggesting that their in a relationship then I receive a message I check the DM and see it's Max it reads "how have you been bro I miss you already my new roommate sucks" I let out a little chuckle at reading the message then I realize that his already replaced me with a new roommate I reply saying "I'm good but I miss you too I hope the new guy tolerates your snoring" after that I switch off my phone and go to bed The following morning I wake up a lot earlier than yesterday I take my breakfast to my room this time because I don't want to see my parents now or not until the afternoon I get my phone and I see Ava Wilder on the Mason Rutherford show Mason welcomes her as the crowd cheers her as she walks on set she takes a seat and then Mason signals the crowd to quiet down Mason opens the conversation saying "Hi Ava! how are you I just want to say you look absolutely stunning" and his not wrong she looks great in her light blue dress with her curled blonde hair and blue circle earrings and a small little necklace around her neck "I'm good you know just a new day" the crowd laughs at that statement "we know you have an upcoming album in the works can you tell us about it?" Mason asks "I don't want to reveal too much but it could be my best work"
"Now for the big question everyone has been asking for we saw you to court side by the NBA so how is your relationship with Christopher Mathews" Ava appears shocked by the question as her cheeks turn red the crowd gives a few "oh's" before she finally answers"well um...we are just friends I mean his a good guy but we are just friends" the crowd seemed a bit disappointed by that answer but they couldn't force her to reveal what they wanted her to reveal "well that's all the time we have left with her for today tuned for other guests after the break" then it breaks for commercials seeing Ava flustered about Christopher kind of infuriates me but his an attractive rich singer whilst am just some nobody I wonder if she has told him about that night when I comforted her but of course she didn't I mean why should she I snapped out of it and took my plate and cup back to the kitchen before I leave I hear a knock at the door at first I just watch the door to see if am not going crazy then I hear the knocks again I go to the front door and open the door I see three guys wearing the same type of gray suits "we are looking for Thomas Phiri" the guy in the middle of them says
"That is me" I responded
"Well we work for Ava Wilder and we are here to make you an offer"
Happy New Year! I know I'm late, but my New Year's resolution is to be more consistent. Please vote on this. Catch you guys tomorrow 😆😉
