The sound of the TV hummed softly in the background, casting a warm glow over the living room as you lounged on the couch, sprawled across Caitlin's lap. Her fingers absentmindedly combed through your hair, a small smile tugging at the corner of her lips as she watched the game highlights.
You glanced up at her, the way her brow furrowed slightly as she concentrated on the screen making your heart do a little flip. "Hey, Cait," you said, breaking the comfortable silence.
"Hmm?" She didn't look away from the screen, but the slight upward curve of her mouth told you she was listening.
"I've got a riddle for you."
That got her attention. She raised an eyebrow, finally shifting her gaze from the TV to you. "Oh yeah? Let's hear it."
You propped yourself up on your elbows, a mischievous glint in your eye. "What goes up but never comes down?"
Caitlin tilted her head, pretending to think hard. You could tell she was about to come out with a ridiculous answer just to mess with you, but instead, she leaned in, a smirk dancing on her lips.
"The amount of stress you're bringing to this family."
Your jaw dropped in mock offence as a burst of laughter escaped her. "Caitlin!"
She shrugged, feigning innocence, her grin only widening as you started to playfully swat at her. "What? You set it up perfectly!"
"That is not the answer!" you exclaimed, trying to suppress your own laughter.
She caught your hands mid-swat, pulling you closer until your faces were just inches apart. Her eyes softened, and a playful glimmer lingered behind them. "Fine, fine. The real answer is 'your age,' isn't it?"
You huffed, though you couldn't help but smile. "Yes, smarty-pants, it is. But now you owe me for ruining my perfectly good riddle."
Caitlin chuckled, brushing a strand of hair from your face. "And what exactly do I owe you?"
You pretended to think for a moment before grinning. "At least ten minutes of uninterrupted cuddles. Maybe some ice cream too."
"Deal," she murmured, pulling you back into her lap and wrapping her arms around you tightly.
The warmth of her embrace was all the reward you needed, the teasing and laughter just another reminder of why you loved her.
"Next time," she whispered into your ear, "try a harder riddle."
"Next time," you shot back with a grin, "try being nicer."
"Not a chance," she said with a laugh, holding you closer.
