Nothing but the occasional flipping of a page filled the mostly empty library as Y/N skimmed through her essays a final time. She was sitting quietly across from Hermione, who was nose-deep in a potions book. Actually, she had been nose-deep in several potions books ever since Y/N got to the library.
"Y/N," Hermione said, breaking the comfortable silence that usually blanketed the two.
Y/N hummed and looked up from her essay. Her head tilted slightly, indicating that she was listening.
"Do you know anything about polyjuice?" the younger girl asked.
Y/N's eyes fell onto the book in her hands: Advanced Potions, Newt. She gave the book and Hermione in turn a thoughtful look before nodding slightly. "I'm familiar."
"What exactly does it do?" Hermione asked, setting the book open on her lap. "The text here says that it'll transform the user into any person of their choosing as long as they have a piece of that person's DNA, typically hair."
"It won't transform you for long," Y/N explained, leaning back in her seat. "The strength of the potion depends on how well you brew it and even then it usually won't last more than an hour. It's also an absolute pain to brew."
"It takes a month to ferment, doesn't it?" Hermione clarified, receiving a nod from Y/N. "So, if you needed three of these potions, would you need to make three batches."
"No," Y/N answered simply. "One batch will do, though it won't be as strong if you're splitting it amongst three people."
She was well aware that the second year was planning something, likely with Ron and Harry, but she wasn't sure how she would even stop them. She doubted she could stop them.
"But, it's highly illegal to impersonate another witch or wizard," she warned, deciding that at least this way she wouldn't feel guilty about not even trying to deter Hermione. "It's also a potion that could easily go wrong."
"Well, of course, if I brewed it incorrectly-"
"No, Hermione," Y/N cut her off, staring seriously at her. "You have to be 100% sure that you have the right person's hair for polyjuice. It's not exactly a forgiving potion. One wrong step and you could be stuck like that forever."
"I'll be careful," Hermione assured her, remaining steadfast in her decision.
Y/N nodded and sighed. "I know."
A week after the girls' conversation, Y/N found herself bidding Angelina and Alicia goodbye for the holidays. They did their usual ritual of hugging each other and promising to write every day.
Luckily, Y/N wouldn't be alone for break. The Weasleys, along with Harry and Hermione, would be staying at Hogwarts as well. The crowd was one that she welcomed earnestly and she was glad to know that she'd have a few less people to worry about.
Lee came up behind her as soon as Angelina and Alicia pulled away. He chuckled at the girls and threw a fond arm over Y/N's shoulders.
"Don't miss me too much," he said, giving her a squeeze. "We still got those eight babies to think about."
Y/N laughed and lightly pushed him off of her. "I refuse to help bring eight more of you into the world."
"You'll come around eventually," he joked, giving her one last hug before waving to the two gingers behind her. "See ya! Keep me updated on your project, okay?"
He flashed them one last smile before turning to join Angelina and Alicia by the door. The three gave their friends a wave before departing for the Hogwarts Express.
