As always, Y/N could be found in the forest behind the L/N family home. Although she still enjoyed learning about magical creatures, all her fantasies of being a magizoologist had been tainted the moment she learned what the curriculum and training entailed - she had also never forgiven Hagrid for the incident with the blast-ended skrewts. Charlie Weasley, who she remained in somewhat regular contact with, however, was determined to revive the dream. So much so that he regularly sent her photos of the creatures he worked with, knowing that it would sway her.
Her friends had unsurprisingly stayed consistent in their letters over the summer. Almost every day, Y/N received multiple letters from her friends recounting the day's exciting and mundane stories - they were lucky enough to live close enough for their owls to be able to make multiple trips. She particularly enjoyed George's rambles about his and Fred's inventions, and partially found Angelina and Alicia's teasing comments about it amusing.
The Weasleys had also recently won the lottery, resulting in a last-minute family vacation to Egypt, where the second eldest son worked. The twins were ecstatic about the trip, though they pretended to be nonchalant.
The lighthearted nature of summer break, however, did not last long this year. Two to three months into break, her father returned from the ministry with a grim look on his face. He was extra dutiful about locking up the house and placed protective charms around the property, all while instructing Y/N to inform her parents about her whereabouts and instilling a curfew on the family.
"What's happened?" her mother asked, looking at her husband in concern.
"Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban," he answered quietly, causing his wife's eyes to widen slightly. "We're not sure how, but the news should be in tomorrow's paper."
"Surely, he wouldn't do anything," she responded, causing Y/N to peer at her parents in confusion. Surprisingly, neither seemed afraid. If anything, they seemed concerned and saddened. "I mean, Sirius-"
"As of now, all we know is that a prisoner has escaped from Azkaban," he cut her off, briefly looking in Y/N's direction. "A prison that no one has been able to escape from."
That night, Y/N sent the twins a letter about the news, figuring that Arthur would have also informed his family. She had heard stories of Sirius Black before and knew a vague version of the Black family history - they had always been close to the Dark Lord. Still, her mom's reaction confused her and she made a note to search Hogwarts' library once school started.
Despite the newfound "danger," Y/N still maintained the same routine and it was only disrupted towards the end of the summer, when Molly Weasley sent a letter to the family extending an invitation for Y/N to join them, along with Hermione, at the Leaky Cauldron for the last week of break. She assured the family that both Dumbledore and the Ministry were aware of their accommodations and had set up security accordingly.
"Oh..." M/N mumbled, looking up at Y/N in concern. "You said you were close with Harry, right?"
"Kind of," Y/N replied, looking up from her dinner with her head tilted. "Why?"
Her mom frowned and glanced at her dad momentarily. "He's met with Cornelius regarding underage magic."
"What?! Is he alright?" Y/N asked bewildered.
Her mom nodded and reread the letter. "It looks like Dumbledore managed to persuade Cornelius, but the Weasley's will be meeting up with Harry this week to ensure he's not alone."
"When did this happen?" her dad asked, having procured a second cup of coffee from the kitchen.
"Beginning of August, it looks like," her mom responded with a slight frown. "Why hadn't we heard anything of it sooner?"
