The journey to the main territory of the Moonlight Pack was, without a doubt, heavy with unspoken tension. At the entrance waited Beta Hyeon of the Moonlight Pack, seemingly aware that they were coming. His sharp eyes assessed the group as they transformed back into their human form, his expression unreadable but heavy with authority.
"Welcome to the Moonlight Pack," Hyeon greeted them with a slight bow. His voice was smooth, each word carefully thought. "We are deeply sorry for your loss. Alpha Dae Hong was a great leader, and Mrs. Choi's passing is a tragedy that affects us all."
"We appreciate your condolences," Namjoon replied calmly and authoritatively. "We're here to pay our respects and see that the pack's investigation does not delay in any aspect."
"Of course. We'll do whatever we can to help. Justice for them is important to us, too." Hyoen nodded his head.
Yoongo stared into him as if trying to break through Hyeon's barrier.
Hyeon brought them to the Moonlight Pack's compound of useful buildings and neatly maintained paths. However, the shadows seemed to move just beyond sight and whispered conversations halted abruptly as they passed.
"The quarters are modest but clean," Hyeon said, gesturing to a row of guest quarters. "Dinner will be served in the main hall this evening. If there is anything you require, do not hesitate to let me know."
"Thank you," Namjoon replied with a polite nod.
Once Hyeon left, Yoongi spoke up, his voice low and clipped. "He's hiding something."
Namjoon's jaw tightened. "I noticed."
"Did you notice how he avoided talking about the rogues?" Yoongi pressed. "And how he kept watching us as if trying to tell how much we know?"
The usual source of serenity, Hoseok frowned. "We're on their territory. So, if something isn't right with this place, then we should be sure not to tread too deeply into something that can get all of us in over our heads.
Namjoon's expression hardened. "We stick to the plan. Let them think we're here to mourn. Tonight, at dinner, we'll start asking questions and see how they react."
As they prepared for the evening, Taehyung sat on the edge of his bed, staring out the window. "This place feels too. perfect," he murmured. "Like they're trying too hard to show us everything's fine."
Jungkook leaned against the doorframe, nodding. "It's too quiet. Packs this size always have some kind of activity, but it's like everyone's been told to keep their heads down."
Hoseok entered the room, his usual brightness replaced by a thoughtful frown. "You're not wrong. Something's off. But we can't act on instinct alone. Namjoon's counting on us to observe first.
"Still, we need to stay alert," Jungkook said. "Whatever they're hiding, we're going to find it."
The main hall of the Moonlight Pack was grand but in a sobering way, its well-licked surfaces and muffled colours speaking to the pack's focus on structure over warmth. The table was filled with food, and the pack members present were gracious and hospitable, but even their smiles felt superficial.
Hyeon sat at the head of the table, a gracious but controlled host. Conversation flowed easily on surface topics: territory boundaries, alliances, and shared traditions. Anything Namjoon tried to say to steer the discussion to the investigation was deflected with subtlety.
"The pack is conducting a thorough inquiry," Hyeon said smoothly in response to one of Namjoon's pointed questions. "You can trust that every detail will be examined."
"Of course," Namjoon said with an expression carefully neutral. "We simply want to ensure no stone is left unturned. The loss of two such significant figures demands answers."
"Indeed," Hyeon replied with a sharp-edged smile. "We all want justice."
Across the table, Yoongi's eyes narrowed, his gaze flicking between Hyeon and the other pack members. The atmosphere was tense, the subtle undercurrents in the conversation speaking volumes about the pack's unwillingness to reveal too much.
As they regrouped in their quarters after dinner, Yoongi spoke up first. "This pack is hiding something. Hyeon's too polished, and the others are too careful. It's like they've rehearsed every word."
Namjoon nodded. "Tomorrow, we start digging. Hoseok, Yoongi, and I will focus on the elders. Taehyung and Jungkook, check the borders for signs of rogue activity. Jimin, you'll stay here and monitor the main hall for anything suspicious."
"Got it," Jimin said, his usual light-heartedness replaced by a rare solemnity.
As they nailed the plan, their resolution hardened. They were deep inside hostile territory, unfamiliar to them, on a mission to dig out the truth. The secrets of the Moonlight Pack were not going to remain concealed for long.
