Demi

I was laying on the exam table as Dr. Riley was putting my feet into the stirrups & I could hardly contain myself. For the last few hours, I had to hide my giddiness, so Nick would be surprised. He was glaring at me, now, thinking I had kept something from him, regarding my health. Thank God, he looked over at Dr. Riley, so I could actually smile. I was surprised I was even smiling as Dr. Riley slid the wand up inside me, since it was a little uncomfortable.

"She didn't tell you about this..." Dr. Riley said as he nodded at the ultrasound screen.

I watched Nick's profile as he stared at the screen & I wanted to laugh, he looked so confused & adorable. "I'm sorry. What am I looking at?" He wrinkled his forehead & shook his head.

"This." Dr. Riley pointed to a spot on the screen, so I lifted my head to look at it.

"Jesus, is that a tumor?" Nick choked out.

Dr. Riley shook his head, trying not to laugh. "It's not a tumor. That. Is your baby."

I stared at Nick's face, a smile erupting on it, as he took in what the doctor was saying. He blinked a few times as his eyebrows lifted. "What? My what?" Nick was speaking in a whisper & then he looked at me. I saw him swallow as he waited for me to say the words.

"I'm pregnant." I croaked out as my smile got even bigger.

Nick's hand came up to his mouth. "You're pregnant? You're not sick?" He asked & I shook my head. Nick's eyes shined with tears & then he let out a giddy chuckle. "Oh my God. We're really...you're really?" I nodded, again & then Nick was kissing me, as he laughed, excitedly.

"I'm sorry I lied to you, but when Dr. Riley told me the news & when he said he was going to do an ultrasound, I knew you had to be here. I couldn't not have you here." I said as Nick pulled away from me, still smiling. He wiped at his eyes, probably so he could see our baby on the screen more clearly.

"I forgive you." He laughed as he squeezed my hand, then looked back up at the screen. Dr. Riley was clicking away & doing what he needed to do, while Nick & I just watched the screen, staring at the image that looked like a wadded up piece of gum or a peanut, but was actually our child.

"Can you see the little flicker? That's the heartbeat & I know it's faint, but that tells me you're about 6 or 7 weeks along." Dr. Riley said, marking some things on a tablet. "As you get farther along, I'll be able to give you a more accurate due date, but as of right now, your due date is May 19."

I looked at Nick & we smiled at each other, both of us thinking that date sounded absolutely perfect, since it was the day before the anniversary of the day we met. "Is everything okay? I mean it took so long. Do you know why it took so long for her to get pregnant?" Nick spoke up, looking over at the doctor.

"Well, a lot of women end up getting pregnant after the procedure Demi had done. I don't know why, exactly, but it has happened often. Who knows what is going on in her body. Maybe it was just the right timing or maybe her uterus needed a little shove in the baby making direction." Dr. Riley chuckled & we both laughed with him. Of course, Nick & I were both so giddy, we would have laughed at anything at that point. "Anyway, everything looks good, but there is a miscarriage risk up until the twelfth week or so. After a visible heartbeat is seen, the risk drops significantly & then each week that passes, it will keep dropping. Since I can see the heartbeat, that means it attached to the uterus with no problem, already decreasing the risk of a miscarriage quite a bit. You don't have any of the risk factors, so try not to worry." Dr. Riley explained.

"Is there anything we can do to prevent a miscarriage?" Nick asked.

"Unfortunately, not really. Everyday activities don't cause miscarriages, so just do what you normally would. Take your vitamins, don't take any other drugs, except tylenol is okay in moderation. Don't smoke or drink. Other than that, there isn't much else to do." Dr. Riley smirked at us.
