Heeseung passed Jake the notepad before sitting down at the table. Jake had just gotten back from his shift at the cafe and after what felt like hours, he could finally tell him what he had found.
"The vents behind the shelf are big enough to hold a person. I think the landlord was creepy enough to watch her from there. There's a hole in the bookshelf. He could have hid in her apartment that night." He explained as he watched Jake read the new notes he had written while he was at work.
Jake stared in thought before looking at Heeseung with his eyebrows slightly raised.
Heeseung stared back at Jake in question, waiting for him to say something about his new findings, but Jake didn't say a thing as he closed the notebook.
Heeseung stayed quiet in thought as he stared at his hands.
"It's getting harder and harder to know what it is that I am making up and what is real. What if I'm just making up that it could be him?" Jake's whisper echoed through the room.
Jake had a lot of time to think after that discussion with Heeseung the night before.
Since Sonny wasn't real, he could easily just be pointing the blame at the weirdest person he could think of.
"What if I talk to the landlord?" Heeseung asked making Jake look at him. "He's still in the building."
"That's another thing. If he really had anything to do with Sonny's death, why wouldn't he run? Why would he stay here? Why haven't the cops figured out it's him? All we had to do is remember his weird behavior and pull the bookshelf to have him as a main suspect. Why would the cops not have him as one? Why would they have me?" Jake said all the questions in his head.
"Are you questioning if you did it?"
"That's the thing Heeseung, I don't even fucking know if it was me!" He said exasperated as he patted his hands against his chest in desperation. "I don't know anything anymore. The Sonny that is always here is just a part of me so how do I know whether she's leading me in the right direction or not?!"
Heeseung stared at him in pity as Jake took in a breath as he looked up at the ceiling, trying to calm down.
"I'm so fucking useless." He whispered to himself as he shook his head.
"You're not Jake. You just went through a hard time-"
"Everyone has gone through a hard time, Heeseung. Heck, you went through a terrible time, and I know that! You lost her too! Why the hell am I the one that has to forget everything when I'm supposed to remember to help find that asshole?! Why did I forget? I am useless, Heeseung. If I had any use to me, he would have been in jail by now!" He argued desperately, before taking in another deep breath.
"Jake."
"Sonny, not now please." He whispered as he placed his head in his hands.
Heeseung barely heard his whisper, but his eyes immediately went a little wide.
"Is she here?"
"Yes."
Jake lifted his head to look at her. She was standing just a few feet behind Heeseung, her hands visibly shaking.
He noticed the look in her eyes and his gaze softened.
"What's wrong, Sonny?"
"I don't know what's wrong with me, Jake." She said, tears running down her cheeks.
"Sonny, what's going on?" He whispered in concern as she closed her eyes tightly, as if she was in pain.
Heeseung was starting to feel a little scared watching Jake stare and speak to thin air. It was almost bone chilling, the silence that followed after Jake's whispers.
