The room fell into a heavy silence, the weight of their shared history settling over them like a storm cloud. Finally, Nico broke the tension with a small, humourless laugh. "Well, it's not like we've ever done things the easy way, huh?"
Selene allowed a faint smirk to touch her lips, though her eyes remained serious. "Never. But this time, we finish it. Together."
Selene quietly stepped into the bedroom, the events of the night weighing heavily on her. She shed her jacket and boots, her movements slow and deliberate, exhaustion finally catching up with her. The room was dimly lit by the soft glow of the city lights streaming through the curtains, and Ayla was already asleep, curled up under the covers.
Selene slipped into bed beside her, careful not to disturb her. As she settled in, Ayla instinctively shifted closer, draping an arm over Selene and nuzzling into her shoulder. Selene couldn't help but smile softly, a sense of peace washing over her despite everything.
Just as Selene was beginning to drift off, she heard Ayla murmur something in her sleep. Her voice was soft and almost unintelligible, but the words made Selene's heart ache and swell at the same time.
"Selene... I love you," Ayla whispered, her breath warm against Selene's skin.
Selene froze for a moment, her heart skipping a beat. She knew Ayla hadn't meant to say it consciously, but the sincerity in those three simple words felt like a balm to her tired soul. Gently, she reached out and brushed a strand of hair away from Ayla's face, her touch lingering.
"I love you too, my little fox," Selene whispered back, her voice barely audible as she pressed a tender kiss to Ayla's forehead.
With that, Selene closed her eyes, holding Ayla close, and allowed sleep to claim her, feeling for the first time in a long while that she wasn't alone in her battles.
Selene woke up to the first rays of sunlight streaming through the curtains. The room was peaceful, the chaos of the previous days momentarily forgotten. She blinked a few times, adjusting to the light, and turned to see Ayla still fast asleep beside her, her hair tousled and her expression serene.
Smiling softly, Selene slipped out of bed, careful not to wake Ayla. She stretched, feeling the tension in her muscles ease as she moved. Heading to the en suite bathroom, she splashed cool water on her face, her reflection staring back at her with renewed determination.
After a quick shower, Selene wrapped herself in a towel and stepped into the walk-in closet. She selected a sharp, tailored black shirt and dark grey slacks, pairing them with a sleek leather belt and ankle boots. The outfit was understated yet commanding, perfect for whatever the day had in store. She brushed her hair back into a neat ponytail and fastened a silver watch around her wrist.
Fully dressed and feeling refreshed, she glanced at Ayla again. She hesitated for a moment, debating whether to wake her or let her sleep a bit longer. Finally, she leaned down and brushed a soft kiss against Ayla's forehead.
"Rest a little more, my fox," Selene whispered. "I'll be downstairs."
She quietly exited the room and headed to the kitchen to brew herself a strong cup of coffee. As the rich aroma filled the air, Selene glanced out the window, her mind already calculating the steps ahead for the day. Despite the uncertainty of their journey, she felt a strange sense of calm—a clarity she hadn't experienced in years. Ayla had become her anchor, and with her by Selene's side, she felt ready for anything.
As Selene sipped her coffee in the quiet morning, her phone buzzed on the counter. It was a message from Leo, urgent and direct:
"I've got the coordinates. They're boarding a ship heading to Dubai. We need to move fast."
