Selene was sitting at her desk, her back to him. She turned slightly at the sound of his footsteps, and when their eyes met, he could see the wariness in her gaze.
She had every right to be cautious, after everything that had happened between them.
"Selene," Amos began, his voice steady despite the storm raging inside of him. "I owe you an apology. For what I did. For what I took from you."
She remained silent, her eyes never leaving his face as he continued.
"I didn't do it because I wanted to hurt you," he said, his words rushed now. "I did it because I thought it was the only way. Your parents were involved in terrible things. Things that endangered so many lives. But I should never have made that decision for you. I should never have made you part of it."
Selene's eyes flickered with pain, but she didn't speak. She was waiting—waiting for him to say the words that would finally put an end to the story they'd been trapped in.
"I'm sorry, Selene," Amos said, his voice breaking slightly. "I'm sorry for everything I did. And I don't expect you to forgive me. But I wanted you to know the truth. You deserve that much."
The silence between them stretched on, heavy and full of unspoken emotion.
Selene's gaze softened, but the hard edges of her anger and hurt remained. Still, there was something in her eyes that told him she was processing, taking in the apology, considering what it meant.
After a long moment, she spoke, her voice quiet but clear.
"I don't know what to say," she admitted. "But I appreciate the truth, Amos. That's all I've ever wanted. And that's a start."
Amos nodded, his throat tight. "I'll do whatever it takes to make things right. I owe you that much, at least."
Selene stood in the doorway, her eyes sharp and searching as she took in the scene. Amos and Ayla were still in the room, the air thick with the remnants of the tense conversation. She had heard the apology, but something was missing—something she needed to understand.
She walked toward them, her gaze never wavering from Amos, her expression a mix of cautious curiosity and lingering anger.
"What provoked you to do it, Amos?" she asked, her voice steady but with an edge. "Why my parents? Why kill them?"
Amos tensed slightly, his eyes flickering as if the question had struck a nerve.
He had prepared for this moment—knew that this was the hardest part—but the weight of it was still overwhelming.
"I told Ayla... I did it because of what they were involved in. The human trafficking. The people they were hurting," Amos explained, his voice low, as though the words still tasted bitter in his mouth. "I believed I was stopping something worse. I thought if I did it, I could stop them from ruining more lives. I wasn't thinking about the consequences—it was a mission. A mission I took on because I thought I was doing the right thing."
Selene's eyes narrowed as she listened, but she didn't interrupt him. She stepped forward and leaned slightly against the desk, her arms crossed.
"Did you actually see them die?" she asked, her tone cutting through the air like a knife. The question was blunt, direct, but it was one she needed an answer to.
Amos looked down, his expression pained. He swallowed before speaking, his voice barely above a whisper.
"No," he admitted, his eyes locked on the floor. "I didn't see them die. I planned it, I set it up, but I wasn't there when it happened." He clenched his fists, as if the admission itself was a weight too heavy to bear. "I never wanted to see them die. I didn't want to be the one to pull the trigger. But I made sure it was done. I knew what had to happen. I thought... I thought it was the only way."
