A day at the beach

The sun shone brightly over the beach, casting a warm glow on the soft sand as waves lapped against the shore. Tim, Lucy, and Emma had decided to spend the day enjoying the seaside, a rare moment of relaxation for the little family. Tim carried the cooler packed with snacks, while Lucy held Emma's hand as the little girl eagerly ran toward the water's edge, Kojo bounding alongside them.

"Slow down, Em!" Lucy called with a laugh as Emma squealed in delight, her small feet kicking up sand.

"But I want to see the waves!" Emma exclaimed, her excitement infectious.

Tim chuckled, setting the cooler down under a large striped umbrella. "Let her burn off that energy. She'll sleep like a rock tonight."

Lucy grinned, shaking her head as she spread out a blanket. "You say that like it's a bad thing."

After setting up their spot, the three of them spent the morning splashing in the water and building sandcastles. Emma had declared herself the queen of the castle they built together, with Kojo as her loyal knight.

By midday, the sun was high in the sky, and they decided to take a break. Tim handed Emma a juice box while Lucy passed out sandwiches.

"This is the best day ever," Emma declared between bites.

"Glad you think so, kiddo," Tim said, ruffling her damp hair.

Lucy leaned back on her elbows, watching the waves roll in. "It's nice to take a break from everything," she said softly.

Tim nodded, understanding the weight behind her words. The past few months had been a whirlwind, but moments like this reminded him what they were fighting for.

The peaceful atmosphere didn't last long.

A commotion near the water drew their attention. A group of beachgoers had gathered, their voices urgent and concerned.

"What's going on?" Lucy asked, sitting up.

Tim narrowed his eyes, his instincts kicking in. "Stay here with Emma," he said, rising to his feet.

"Be careful," Lucy called after him, her worry evident.

As Tim approached the crowd, he saw a young boy struggling in the water, caught in a rip current. His mother stood on the shore, screaming for help.

Without hesitation, Tim sprinted toward the lifeguard tower. "There's a kid out there!" he shouted.

One of the lifeguards, a woman with sun-kissed skin and a confident demeanor, grabbed a rescue board and took off toward the water. Tim followed, his training as a police officer driving him to assist however he could.

The lifeguard reached the boy first, expertly maneuvering the rescue board to keep him afloat. Tim helped pull them both to shore, his strength cutting through the waves with ease.

By the time they reached the beach, the boy was coughing and crying but otherwise unharmed. His mother wrapped him in a tight embrace, tears streaming down her face.

"Thank you, thank you," she sobbed, looking between Tim and the lifeguard.

"Just doing our job," the lifeguard said with a reassuring smile.

Tim nodded, his heart still pounding from the adrenaline.

As the crowd dispersed, the lifeguard turned to Tim, her smile warm and appreciative. "You handled yourself out there. Do you work in law enforcement or something?"

"Yeah, LAPD," Tim said, brushing a hand through his damp hair.

"I thought so. You've got that no-nonsense vibe," she teased, holding out her hand. "I'm Ashley."

"Tim," he replied, shaking her hand.

Ashley tilted her head, studying him. "You should think about joining the lifeguard team on your days off. We could use someone like you."

Tim chuckled. "I think I've got my hands full already."

"Well, if you ever change your mind..." Ashley reached into her bag and pulled out a small notebook, jotting something down. She tore out the page and handed it to him. "That's my number. You know, in case you ever need backup in the water."

Tim hesitated, glancing at the paper before tucking it into his pocket. "Thanks."

When Tim returned to Lucy and Emma, he found them playing with Kojo near their blanket. Lucy looked up as he approached, her eyes narrowing slightly.

"Everything okay?" she asked.

"Yeah," Tim said, sitting down beside her. "A kid got caught in a rip current, but he's fine now."

"Glad to hear it." Lucy studied him for a moment, noticing the piece of paper he had absentmindedly pulled from his pocket.

"What's that?" she asked, her tone casual but curious.

Tim glanced at the paper and folded it quickly. "Nothing important. Just a lifeguard I worked with out there."

Lucy raised an eyebrow but didn't press further. Instead, she turned her attention back to Emma, who was proudly showing off a seashell she had found.

As the sun began to set, casting the beach in hues of orange and pink, the three of them packed up their things and headed home.

The day had been full of laughter and adventure, but as Tim drove, his mind kept wandering back to the conversation with Ashley. He hadn't done anything wrong, but something about the interaction gnawed at him.

Lucy sat beside him, quietly humming along to the radio. She glanced at him out of the corner of her eye, sensing his unease but choosing not to say anything.

For now.
