The weeks leading up to Emma's birthday were filled with anticipation and excitement. Lucy had taken it upon herself to plan the perfect celebration for Emma, determined to make it special. Tim had always been the responsible one, but Lucy wanted to ensure that Emma's day would be memorable, especially after everything she'd been through.

Tim, despite his busy schedule, had promised to help where he could, but it was clear that Lucy had taken charge. She sat at the kitchen table late into the night, a pile of papers and colorful markers scattered around her as she brainstormed ideas. The soft glow of the lamp beside her cast a warm light over her work, but her eyes were bloodshot from the long hours she'd been putting in.

"Alright," Lucy muttered to herself, "We need cake, presents, a theme... but how do we keep it affordable?" She glanced at the calendar, counting the days until Emma's big day. Only two weeks left.

She grabbed her phone and started scrolling through a list of local party stores. The options seemed endless—balloons, decorations, themed plates, and cups. But what would Emma like? Her thoughts immediately went to all the things Emma loved. The girl adored animals, especially elephants and unicorns. Lucy smiled to herself, picturing Emma's wide eyes when she saw the decorations.

"Okay," Lucy whispered, determined. "Unicorn theme. It's got to be unicorns."

She began drafting an invitation design, carefully considering the wording. It had to be perfect, playful, and exciting enough to get Emma's friends interested. She crafted a message that read:

"You're invited to a magical day of fun and laughter at Emma's Unicorn Birthday Bash! Join us for games, treats, and the best birthday cake ever. You won't want to miss it!"

Once she finalized the invitation text, Lucy quickly printed it out, cutting them into neat squares. She ran to the living room, where Tim was lounging on the couch, his legs stretched out, flipping through channels on the TV.

"Tim!" Lucy said as she walked in. "Can you help me with something?"

Tim looked up from the remote control, glancing at the clock on the wall. "What's up?"

"Can you deliver these invitations to the parents of Emma's friends? I made too many and I don't want to miss anyone."

Tim raised an eyebrow but nodded. "Sure, no problem."

"Thanks," Lucy smiled gratefully, handing him the stack of envelopes. "The more help you give me, the more cookies you'll get later."

Tim chuckled. "I'll take that deal." He stood up and grabbed the pile of invites, giving her a wink. "I'll be back in a bit."

As the days passed, Lucy spent every free moment planning the birthday bash. She had already ordered the cake—a rainbow-colored, unicorn-themed masterpiece from a local bakery. The bakery had even promised to make the unicorn's horn golden, just as Emma had requested after a conversation they'd had about her favorite fairy tales.

She'd also found a cheap but adorable unicorn costume that Emma could wear on the day. Lucy had no doubt Emma would love it. But there was still so much to do—decorating, organizing games, and, most importantly, making sure Emma felt as loved as possible.

Late one night, as Lucy sketched out party games in her notebook, she heard the door open. Tim's voice called out softly, "Hey, you still up?"

Lucy rubbed her tired eyes and stood, stretching. "Yeah, just finishing up a few things. Emma's going to be so excited!"

Tim walked in, a small grin on his face. "I'm sure she will. You've been going full throttle on this, huh?"

Lucy nodded, a bit sheepishly. "Yeah. I want it to be perfect for her. After everything she's been through..." Her voice trailed off as she thought about Emma's past struggles and the challenges she had faced, even at such a young age.

Tim's expression softened. "You're doing great, Lucy. She's lucky to have you."

She looked up at him, her heart swelling with gratitude. "I'm just doing what any friend would do."

Tim walked over, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Yeah, well, you're going above and beyond. She's going to feel special—trust me."

Lucy gave him a tired but grateful smile. "Thanks, Tim. It means a lot."

With Tim's help, the invitations were delivered, and the decorations started to fall into place. The living room was transformed into a unicorn wonderland. Rainbow streamers hung from the ceiling, and the walls were adorned with glittering unicorn posters. Tim had even volunteered to set up a DIY photo booth with unicorn props, complete with a backdrop of sparkling stars.

One evening, Lucy was knee-deep in wrapping presents when Emma came into the living room, her eyes wide with curiosity. "What are you doing, Lucie?"

Lucy quickly hid the presents behind her back, laughing nervously. "Nothing, sweetie. Just getting things ready for your big day!"

Emma grinned, her excitement palpable. "Is it unicorn-themed?"

Lucy chuckled, kneeling down to Emma's level. "How did you guess?"

Emma shrugged, her wide smile betraying her. "You've been talking about it nonstop. I can't wait!"

Lucy ruffled Emma's hair. "I can't wait either. But you have to promise me something, alright?"

"Anything!" Emma said eagerly.

"Promise me you won't peek at the presents before the party," Lucy said with a teasing smile.

Emma giggled, shaking her head. "I won't, Lucie! I promise!"

Over the next few days, Tim continued to help when he could, but his work schedule had picked up again, and he had long shifts. Emma had become accustomed to helping Lucy out, and the two of them spent hours together, making cookies for the party and blowing up balloons.

One night, while Lucy was picking up the last few items from the store, Tim decided to surprise her. He picked up Emma from the park, where she had been playing with Kojo, and brought her home. He had an idea to get a few last-minute items, including some party hats for the kids.

When Lucy came back to the house, she was surprised to find everything set up. Streamers were hanging, balloons were floating around the room, and a small stack of presents sat near the couch. Emma's face lit up when she saw her.

"Look, Lucie! Daddy helped!"

Lucy smiled, feeling an overwhelming sense of relief. "You two are amazing. I couldn't have done this without you."

Tim smiled at her, his expression warm and sincere. "It's what we do for family, right?"

She nodded, grateful for his support. "I just hope Emma loves it."

As the days ticked closer to Emma's birthday, Lucy continued to pour her heart into every detail. She had planned a special unicorn scavenger hunt for the kids, where they'd have to solve clues and find hidden unicorn figurines. And after all the excitement, they'd have a big group cake cutting ceremony, followed by a dance party with glittering unicorn confetti falling from the ceiling.

Emma was in for the best day of her life, and Lucy couldn't wait to see the smile on her face when she saw it all come together.
