The day of Emma's birthday had finally arrived. The house was buzzing with excitement, filled with the sounds of children laughing, playing games, and chattering excitedly. Tim, Lucy, and Emma had worked tirelessly in the weeks leading up to this moment, and now it was all coming together. The house was adorned with rainbow streamers, unicorn decorations, and balloons that fluttered in the light breeze that drifted through the open windows. The smell of fresh cookies and cake filled the air as the children ran around, chasing each other in their colorful party hats.
It had been a perfect day so far. Emma's eyes had lit up when she saw the party set up in the living room. The unicorn theme was a hit, and she had already made a new group of friends, some of whom Tim knew from his work with the police force. Angela Lopez, Nyla Harper, and Weasley Evers had all shown up, bringing their families along for the celebration. They chatted with Tim and Lucy, offering their congratulations and sharing stories of their own childhood birthdays. Everyone was in high spirits, with the tension of the past few weeks forgotten, at least for a moment.
"Are you enjoying your party, Em?" Lucy asked, smiling as she watched Emma rush past with a balloon tied to her wrist.
Emma stopped for a moment, grinning from ear to ear. "Yes, Lucie! It's the best party ever!"
Tim gave a small, proud smile as he watched his daughter interact with her friends. He had done his best to help, even if he didn't fully understand the fuss about themes and decorations. But seeing Emma so happy made it all worth it.
As the afternoon wore on, the party continued in full swing. The kids had gathered around for a scavenger hunt, and the older group stood chatting near the cake table, occasionally glancing over at the kids to make sure no one got too rowdy.
Tim had invited everyone he thought might add to the festivities. Angela, Nyla, and John had come with their spouses, and even Ashley, Tim's girlfriend, had shown up. While it wasn't exactly the kind of event she was used to, she put on a smile for Tim's sake, though it was clear from her body language that she wasn't entirely comfortable in the chaotic, child-centered environment.
The evening eventually wound down, and the last of the guests had left. The house was quieter now, the sound of children's laughter replaced by the soft hum of the dishwasher in the background. Tim stood in the living room, surveying the space, while Lucy made sure Emma was settled down in bed.
"Thank you, Tim," Lucy said as she walked into the living room, a soft smile on her face. "This party was a huge success. You did so much for it."
Tim returned her smile. "Of course. Emma deserves it." He paused, running a hand through his hair. "It's been a good day."
"Yeah," Lucy agreed, looking toward the stairs where Emma's bedroom door was closed. "She's been so happy. I think she's exhausted, though."
"I'm sure. I'm just glad she enjoyed it."
Tim's smile faded as he glanced toward the kitchen. Ashley had helped out in her own way, but there was an unease that lingered between the two of them. It hadn't been the easiest day for Ashley, though she had tried her best to be supportive. But there was an undercurrent of tension that had been brewing between them lately, something that Lucy had noticed but hadn't commented on—yet.
After a few minutes of silence, Tim finally spoke up again, his voice quiet. "I'm going to head upstairs and check on Em."
But before he could move, he heard Ashley's voice from the kitchen, her tone sharp, as though she was in the middle of an argument.
"Tim, we need to talk," Ashley's voice was cold and unwavering.
Tim let out a sigh, clearly not in the mood for a confrontation. "Ashley, not now. We just finished the party."
"Exactly!" Ashley's voice was almost cutting. "Why are you still so focused on Lucy? She doesn't need to be here, Tim. I'm your girlfriend. Not her. I can take care of Emma just fine. I've practically moved in with you."
Tim's jaw tightened, his patience wearing thin. "This isn't about you and me, Ashley. It's about Emma. I'm not just going to abandon her for some picture-perfect relationship. Lucy has been a huge part of her life, and she's family to me."
Ashley's laugh was bitter. "Family? She's not family, Tim. She's a complication. You know it. You've known it from the start." There was a dangerous edge to her voice now, the tension in her words thickening the air between them.
"Don't start this again, Ashley. I'm not discussing this right now," Tim shot back, his tone firm but controlled. "I'll deal with it later."
"No, Tim. I'm done being ignored," Ashley snapped. "You can't keep playing the good dad and the good boyfriend. Either you make a choice, or I'm done. I'm your girlfriend. If you want me around, you can't keep prioritizing her."
Tim's heart pounded in his chest, the argument rising to a level he wasn't sure how to handle. He hadn't expected things to be this difficult. "Ashley, please—"
"No! Don't 'please' me, Tim!" Ashley interrupted. "You're choosing her over me, and it's getting old. I don't need to play second fiddle to Lucy and Emma. I've been patient, but this is it. I'm tired of being a backup plan."
Tim's hands clenched into fists at his sides, trying to keep his temper in check. "That's not what this is. It's not about picking sides, Ashley. It's about what's best for Emma."
"I don't care about what's best for Emma," Ashley shot back, her voice rising. "I care about you. I'm the one here with you, not her. I should be your priority, not her. Do you even get that?"
Tim stared at her, his frustration mounting. "Ashley, this isn't about you or me. This is about what Emma needs. You know that. And you're making this way more complicated than it needs to be."
"Complicated? Tim, you're the one making things complicated!" Ashley's voice cracked with emotion. "I'm done being patient. I'm done being understanding. You can't keep stringing me along while you keep her in your life like this. I'm your girlfriend. Not her."
Before Tim could respond, Ashley stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her. Tim stood there for a long moment, his heart pounding in his chest. He didn't know what to think or feel. But the weight of the argument lingered, and the distance between him and Ashley had never felt greater.
After a few minutes of silence, Tim took a deep breath and walked slowly toward the stairs, his mind still racing. He had to make a decision—one that would affect not just his relationship with Ashley, but also his relationship with Emma, and even with Lucy.
It wasn't an easy choice, and it wasn't a decision he could make in the heat of the moment. But as he reached the top of the stairs, he knew one thing for certain. His family—Emma, Lucy, and even Kojo—was the most important thing in his life. And if Ashley couldn't understand that, then maybe it was time to let her go.
He paused at Emma's bedroom door, listening to her soft breathing inside. He smiled, knowing that, no matter what happened with Ashley, Emma would always be his priority. The door had closed behind him. But a door to something else was now wide open.
Tim stepped into the quiet, his mind made up.
