I wanna take the best parts of you...With a little bit of me...We'd be so proud
After dressing, I went downstairs finding Nicole curled up on the sofa in the living room.
Her face was filled with a pained expression that made my heart ache.
The house was quiet, Megan and Benjamin were at church, leaving the two of us to fill the silence.
"Hey, are you okay?" I asked, My eyes scanned her face, searching for any sign that this was more than just a minor issue.
She nodded, but the effort it took was obvious.
"Yeah, it's just the Braxton Hicks contractions," she said, taking a deep breath like she was trying to convince herself as much as me.
I studied her for a moment, still unsure. "Are you sure? I asked my voice full of concern. "I mean, do you think you're okay enough to still go grab smoothies?"
She gave a small smile, but it was tight, like it was more for my benefit than anything else. "I'll be fine. It's not a big deal."
I couldn't help but hesitate. "If you're not feeling up to it, we can stay in. I can get you whatever you need."
I was starting to worry she might be pushing herself too hard, but I didn't want to make her feel like I was treating her like she was helpless.
Nicole met my eyes and took a deep breath, the discomfort still there but more controlled now.
"No, I'm good. A smoothie sounds nice," she said, her voice steadier this time. "Let's go."
"Alright. Let's take it easy, okay?" I offered her a hand, helping her to her feet...
I made sure to lock the front door, the soft click of the lock echoing in the quiet morning air.
Turning around to find Nicole already moving ahead of me, making her way to the car.
She wasn't walking too fast, but I could see the slight wince in her step that she was trying to hide.
Reaching the car, she was already in the passenger seat, her hands folded in her lap, her eyes staring straight ahead as if she was trying to focus on anything other than the discomfort.
I hesitated for a moment before sliding into the driver's seat, looking at her again.
"You sure you're okay?" I asked...
"Yeah, I'm fine," she said, her voice steady despite the strain on her face. "It's just a smoothie run, right?"
I studied her for a moment longer, still unconvinced but unwilling to press her too hard.
"Alright. Just a quick break. We'll take it easy."
She nodded, her hand resting lightly on her stomach.
I carefully backed out of the driveway, starting the engine and ensuring I didn't rush.
The street was quiet as I turned onto the main road, the morning sun spilling over the horizon in soft streaks of orange and pink.
