"Please na, Veer." Adhira tugged at his arm again, as she stood beside him. Veer was sprawled on the sofa in the living room, headphones on as an action movie played on his laptop.
"Bhabhi..." He sighed, pausing the movie, and pulling his headphones down around his neck. "You know me, I don't even go to family functions."
"And this?" His eyes flickered up to meet hers. "This is a business wedding. Boring and unnecessary."
"But I'll be there." Adhira tilted her head, her voice dipping into a pleading tone. "I promise you won't be bored."
Veer chuckled faintly, shaking his head as he leaned back into the sofa. "These formal events aren't for me, Bhabhi. And you'll be fine, Bhaiya is there for you."
Her face fell and she slumped onto the seat next to him. "Your Bhaiya isn't even talking to me. I'll have to sit through this reception all alone while he'll be talking business with some random uncles."
"Who's at fault?" He asked after a moment of silence.
"I am." She replied, huffing.
"Then you gotta make it up for him." He said, setting his laptop aside.
"How?" She glanced at him sideways, her brows furrowing. "He's been ignoring me completely."
"He won't tonight." He crossed his arms, his lips curling up into a playful smirk.
"What do you mean?" Adhira blinked, confused.
"Look stunning tonight. Like he can't take his eyes off you, itna stunning." He grinned.
Her lips parted in a surprise, not expecting this kind of advice from him. "Veer," She said, sternly.
"What?" He shrugged innocently, picking up his laptop and placing it back onto his lap. "Free advice hai, Bhabhi. Aage jaisi aapki marzi."
"Waise bhi, he's just pretending to be mad at you," He added with a teasing smile. "He has been sending me texts to check on you every half an hour."
Adhira froze for a moment, mulling over his words. "Really?" She whispered, her voice barely audible.
"Yeah," Veer nodded, his smile widening.
"Veer, is she okay? Veer, did she eat? Veer, what's she doing? Veer, keep updating me."
She lowered her gaze, chewing on her lips as guilty crept in, layering the earlier one.
Standing up, she inhaled deeply, her mind made up. "Thanks Veer." She muttered, offering him a genuine smile.
"Any time, Bhabhi." He gave her a casual salute, a small grin still plastered at his face. "Just don't tell Bhaiya I gave you his secrets. He'll kill me for sure."
"Don't worry about that." Adhira laughed softly, shaking her head as she turned to leave for her room.
She plopped onto the bed with a dramatic sigh, her gaze fixed on the ceiling. She felt the weight of tears brimming in her chest, but none came. She had been crying herself dry since last night.
She reached for the bangles on her wrist, slipping them off one by one. Turning onto her stomach, she picked up her phone, her thumb hovering over his contact. One last try, she thought.
