Gracie was in a state of distress following the realisation that it was really all over. She should have known, but a part of her had hoped that there was something she could do to fix this.
The argument she had with Mia didn't help her feel any better. As the next day rolled around, Gracie had disassociated with the whole situation, slugging through the day almost on autopilot.
The house was eerily quiet, like a ghost town. Gracie could only hear the sounds of her own breathing, the only sign of life.
A sudden knock on the door cut through the silence, causing Gracie to flinch at the sound, getting pulled out of her own thoughts.
She didn't think twice before making her way towards the front door. The hinges creaked as she pulled it open, "Taylor?" Gracie hummed in surprise, not expecting her best friend to be there.
"What are you doing here?" She asked surprised. Taylor took in Gracies appearance. She looked like shit. Her hair dishevelled, eyes tired, but they still carried a flicker of hope.
Taylor swallowed thickly, "Hey, can I come in?" Taylor asked softly, her heart pounding in her chest as a flicker of guilt wrenched in her stomach.
Taylor had helped Gracie through bad decisions, fights, drunken nights, but this, this was a very different situation. This was the end and she knew how much it's going to shatter her best friend.
Gracie hesitated for a split second, then stepped aside. There was a suffocating feeling settled over the place. It wasn't like it used to be. When Taylor would visit and it would be happy and warm, not like this.
Taylor turned, gripping the envelope in her hand. Her throat felt dry as she managed Gracies name from her lips.
Gracies eyes flicked to the envelope, already having a good guess what papers were inside. The room went still as Gracie stared at it.
"No." Gracie stammered, shaking her head. "No, not like this, please." Gracie mumbled out as tears welled in her eyes.
"She couldn't do it herself. She figured it was better someone close to you delivered them than a stranger." Taylor said, pulling Gracie in for a tight hug.
Gracie exhaled sharply, trying to blink away the forming tears. "I can't do this. She can't even look me in the eye and tell me it's really over." Gracie sobbed, unable to stop herself.
"Hey, look at me." Taylor said as she cupped Gracies cheeks and brought their gazes together. "I love you, but you broke her heart, Gracie. In the worst possible way. It is over." Taylor said, trying her best not to sound angry.
In truth, she was kind of pissed. Gracie was her best friend, but Y/n was her friend too. Taylor saw that they had a good thing going and Gracie ruined it for herself.
Gracie pulled away from her best friends touch, her expression mixed between anger and devastation. "Did she send you here because she thought I'm gonna do something stupid?" Her voice cracked. "You think I didn't know it was over?"
Taylor didn't answer. She knew she didn't need to. Regardless of what happened, she was here to comfort her friend.
Gracie exhaled, her shoulders slumping as she slowly reached out. Her fingers hesitated before gripping the envelope. She had the passing thought of tearinging it up, but that would only delay the inevitable.
Gracie stared at the envelope, unsure what to do with it now that it was in her grasp. "So this is it." Gracie whispered as she ran her finge over the edge of the envelope.
"I'm sorry, I know how devastating this is for you." Taylor whispered as she pulled Gracie in for another hug.
Taylors heart hurt as she pulled away, seeing the utter defeat in Gracies eyes. This was going to destroy her, but she'll be able to get over it, Taylor knew that.
Gracie nodded her head slowly before turning away, walking further into the house without exchanging another word.
Taylor stood there for a moment, wondering whether she should leave, but decided to stay in case Gracie needed her. She would give her space, but she would be there for her if Gracie wanted.

Earlier that day...
Y/n found out that Taylor was close to their city, so she invited her to meet at a local place where she knew they wouldn't be bothered.
Y/n got there first, taking a seat at her reserved table in the VIP section. She placed an envelope on the table, staring it down until Taylor showed up a few minutes later.
Y/n managed a half smile as she greeted her friend. The pair conversed for some time until Y/n brought up why she invited her here.
"There's no easy way to say this." Y/n started, her hands shaking slightly with anxiety as she hid them in her lap.
Taylor raised an eyebrow at her before eyeing the envelope on the table. "I need you to deliver these to Gracie." Y/n said softly as she slid the envelope closer to Taylor.
"Excuse me? You want me to what now?" Taylor asked, her voice low, her eyes searching Y/ns for any sign of a joke.
"Legally I can't serve her myself, so I thought the next best thing was someone she knows and trusts. I don't want her to be alone when she gets them. She'll need you." Y/n said softly.
Taylor leaned back, exhaling slowly. "Damn Y/n. This is really a lot." Taylor whispers, her eyes full of pity for her friend.
"I know and I'm sorry. I understand if you don't want to, I just thought a friendly face would be nice." Y/n reassured.
"I can't believe you care so much about how she feels after what she did to you." Taylor muttered under her breath, unable to speak the words fully aloud.
"A tiny part of me will always care about her, I can't help that. But I can not stay with someone who betrayed me like this." Y/n said quietly.
The envelope sat between them, creating a vague tension in the room. All those years down the drain just like that. With a simple set of papers, it's all over.
"Last time I spoke to Gracie, she still thought you might change your mind. That she could fix this." Taylor said, her eyes locked onto Y/ns.
"That's why I want it to be you. You can help ground her, make sure she doesn't do anything...dumb." Y/n said with a pause.
"You know you're asking me to break her heart." Taylor exhaled softly, looking down at the envelope. "It's already broken, as is mine." Y/n chuckled dryly. She would have never thought this would be her life.
Taylor exhaled heavily, "Okay," she muttered under her breath. It was the least she could do to help Y/n move forward.
"I'll do it latet today." Taylor assured as Y/n placed her hand over Taylors. "Thank you." Y/n hummed appreciatively.
Taylor tucked the envelope away in her coat, releasing some of the tension that had built up between them.
This may just be one of the hardest things she'll ever have to do, but she needed to. Both for Y/n and for Gracie. It sucked that things would never be the same between the three of them again.
Y/n gave Taylor a final, half assed smile, hugging her goodbye as her heart ached in her chest. She wasn't sure how she was supposed to keep going like this. She had always pictured Gracie in her future, no matter how far. There was no other option but to focus on work to get her mind off things.
