Y/n reaches for her phone, her eyes partly open looking for what time it is. It was only 8am which meant she hardly got 6 hours of sleep.
She unlocked her phone and her chat with Zara was on her screen as she didn't swipe out the night before.
Her last message stared back at her as Y/n blinked slowly, and then fumbled to delete the message once she realised it was real and not a figment of her imagination.
It didn't show the message as seen so Y/n hoped that Zara didn't see it. She groaned at herself, they've been on 3 dates and talking for a few weeks and she's already saying those words.
A little while ago Y/n thought she would never love again...yet here she was sending drunk 2 am texts to Zara.
Y/n threw her phone aside after unsending the message, rubbing her face with her hands. Just because it didn't show it as seen doesn't mean Zara hadn't seen it.
Suddenly Y/n was wide awake, unable to even think about sleeping anymore. She stress cleaned the house a little bit before starting to make breakfast at around 10.
Everyone had plans for today so she knew nobody would sleep in too late. Zara had texted her good morning before then, at around 9 am.
Y/n responded to her pretty quickly and they talked for a bit. Y/n sighed in relief as the conversation seemed to go as normal which she hoped meant Zara hadn't seen that last message.
They all ate breakfast together in silence, trying to nurse their splitting headaches. After breakfast, Y/n went straight home and went to sleep for a few more hours before tonight's dinner with the boss.
---
The first thing Y/n did when she woke up was take a shower. She felt groggy and the shower really helped her wake up.
After the shower, she generally felt a lot better. More awake and alert and no drowsiness left from last night's drinking.
She had just under 2 hours before she was expected at her bosses, Mr Brouwers' home. She dressed up as fancy as she could, because knowing him, his family definitely dressed up for Christmas.
He told her not to worry about bringing anything but Y/n couldn't show up empty-handed, so she got some wine. Red and white as she didn't know their preference.
Y/n pulled up to the address she was given a few minutes early and looking at the place, Y/n expected nothing less. Her boss was an extravagant man.
She parked up next to Mr Brouwers car and slowly made her way towards their front door, trying to get her nerves in check.
The doorbell rang out loudly as Y/n patiently waited at the door. "Oh wow." Y/n whispered awestruck as Zara opened the door.
Zara smiled at her softly as Y/n admired her for a few moments. "Come in," Zara giggled, moving aside.
"Y/n, welcome." Mrs Brouwer greeted with excitement as she walked up, putting her arms out for a hug.
"Thanks for having me, Mrs Brouwer." Y/n said with her charming little smile. "Oh no need for that, call me Jane." She smiled at Y/n as she took her appearance in and the two bottles of wine in her hand.
Jane smiled when she saw how Zara couldn't tear her eyes away from Y/n. Her husband had looped her in on his plan of trying to get the two of them together.
"Koen told me so much about you." Jane smiled as the three of them walked towards the kitchen. "Don't believe any of it," Y/n said with a cheeky wink, making both Jane and Zara smile.
Y/n left the wine on the kitchen counter before turning back to proceed with her conversation.
"Oh there she is!" Keon exclaimed with a hearty laugh as he descended the stairs.
"I see you met my wife, welcome to our home sweetheart." He said as he pulled Y/n in for a tight hug.
"Thank you for having me. I know Christmas is usually for family." Y/n said appreciatively as she didn't really want to spend it alone.
"Oh nonsense Y/n, you are family." He grins, patting her on the shoulder. "Shall we go eat?" Keon says as he gestures towards the dining room, the table already set.
The side dishes were already on the table and Y/n helped with bringing out the main meal as it was still tucked away in the oven so it wouldn't get cold.
A sudden wave of saddness washed over Y/n midway through the meal. They were having such a great time and Y/n truly felt like part of the family.
But that brought back her memories of her parents and her sister celebrating holidays like this. Happy before everything happened.
"Y/n darling, are you okay?" Jane asks, pulling Y/n out of her thoughts. "Oh yes sorry. I'm alright." Y/n said, putting on her best smile and pushing the memory as far back into her mind as she can.
Zara, who is sitting next to Y/n, puts a hand over hers and gives it a little reassuring squeeze.
Y/n smiles at her, comforted by the small gesture. She easily gets back into the conversation, the memory slipping from her mind completely after a few minutes.
Dinner goes great and Y/n really feels happy. It was so easy to be herself around this family and enjoy her time here. She almost wished she could stay in this moment forever.
Next Jane brings out the dessert and starts refilling everyone's glasses with wine. "Oh no, I couldn't. I have to drive home." Y/n protests as Jane comes to her glass.
She only had one glass with dinner and by the time she has to drive it will be well out of her system.
"Nonsense Y/n. We have a guest room ready for you, you should stay the night." Jane says as she pours the wine anyway.
"I really don't want to intrude much longer." Y/n hesitates. "You could never intrude, we love having you here." Keon expresses.
"You'll stay tonight and can leave in the morning if you wish." He adds thoughtfully. "If you insist, I'll be happy to stay." Y/n smiles.
"Great. Now after dessert, why don't we move this by the fireplace, nice and cozy." Keon says happily.
They spend the rest of the night talking and laughing as they share stories by the fireplace. Each drinking a fair share of wine.
Keon and Jane retire to bed at around midnight, leaving Y/n and Zara alone by the fireplace.
They sat in silence for a while, just enjoying each other's presence. Finally Zara gets up and moves across the big couch and kneels down closer to where Y/n is sitting.
"My parents really seem to adore you." Zara whispers as she leans into Y/ns space. Y/n hums in content, a small smile on her lips.
"And I adore you." Y/n says quietly, barely above a whisper. Zara smiles slightly, she had seen Y/ns drunken text early this morning but hadn't opened it right away as she felt too giddy.
Once she composed herself and got back to her phone, the text was gone, like it had never existed.
A part of Zara felt disappointed by it, but she realised they haven't known each other very long. Y/n must have panicked and deleted the text. Or did she not even mean it?
Tonight reassured Zara that Y/n had true and genuine feelings for her. Maybe not quite love yet, as much as she threw the word around while drunk, but she was sure they'd get there soon.
Y/n brushed Zaras' cheek softly before their lips met in a slow, passionate kiss. "Will you keep me company tonight?" Zara asked softly as their lips parted.
"I'm not sure thats a good-" Y/n started protesting, aware that they both have consumed quite a lot of alcohol.
"Please, I just want your arms around me." Zara whispered against Y/ns lips before she finished her sentence. "Okay," Y/n smiled softly.
