Once everything came to light, there was a shift in Mia's world. It felt like the world tore in two, leaving her to pick up the pieces. Mia had struggled in a different way than Gracie.

After Y/n and Gracie separated, Mia wanted to stay with Gracie. Y/n had essentially disowned her and she had no one else. But that wasn't the reason; she truly believed in her heart of hearts that she loved Gracie. That they loved each other.

However Mia learned the hard way that the relationship between her and Gracie was nothing more than a fling for her. After numerous attempts to coax Gracie into forgiving her and giving them an actual chance at love, Gracie berated her and told her that their time together meant absolutely nothing to her and that she should be embarrassed of herself.

That was Mia's second heartbreak. First she lost Y/n, getting cut off completely and now Gracie also wanted nothing to do with her. No matter how hard she tried to maintain that connection, even under the guise of just friends, it never worked as Gracie stood firm on her boundaries.

When Gracie pushed Mia away, she was forced to face her own behaviour and the consequences of her obsession and her selfishness. Though Mia never once regretted what they did, she believed that it was justified, that love is love and they couldn't change that. The only thing she was sorry about was that Gracie didn't see it that way.

Over time, as Mia learned that Gracie had moved away, she had to accept that she could no longer try to insert herself into Gracie's life. She still felt a lot of anger over how things had ended, but she channelled that energy into college, as she still had some way to go.

It was tough learning how to navigate life by herself, especially without Y/ns financial support. Not too long ago, she would have never gone a day without seeing her family, but then her parents died and Y/n disowned her. She was left completely and utterly alone for the first time in her life and she couldn't handle it.

The stress and financial instability eventually led to Mia dropping out of college and getting a job at a coffee shop. It wasn't what she wanted, but for now it's all she could afford. College was a drain on her, leading her into more and more debt.

It took a lot of sweat, pain and tears for Gracie to figure out independent life, but she eventually got on her feet. She tried to contact Y/n multiple times, especially right before she dropped out of college, begging for money to cover her tuition.

She never got a response, never knew if Y/n had even gotten the messages. It wasn't easy to find how to contact her as she switched numbers and blocked her on all social media accounts. But either way, Mia knew that contacting her remotely was not going to work.

It made her realise that once some doors are closed, they in fact cannot be reopened. She became more self reliant but remained uneasy as a constant reminder of what she had lost plagued her mind.

Gracie is and forever will be the one that got away.

Mia managed to find Y/n online through a congratulatory post published by her current job. After a little digging, she found out that Y/n was soon to be remarried. After all these years, she finally moved on. It's been so long that Mia had to pause to think how many years have passed.

Regardless of how it may seem, despite Mia's complete lack of remorse, she did feel happy for her sister. She didn't want to hurt her and she wishes she hadn't had to. But it wasn't her fault that Y/ns wife just so happened to be the love of her life.

Mia has moved on from Gracie, but never forgot her. Given the chance she'd drop everything to be with her. But she's been hearing rumours recently that Gracie is dating some actress chick.

Currently, Mia is with her boyfriend, Jason. It took a long time to come to terms that Gracie will never want her, so she slowly moved on. But since her brief romance with Gracie ended, Mia completely closed herself off to romance with women.

She figured if she couldn't have Gracie, she didn't want anyone else. She didn't want to experience that kind of heartbreak again. That is how she ended up settling for a man. He was an average guy, but he was nice to her and spoiled her, even if he was a little boring.

Mia was never really happy in any of the relationships she's been in with men and Jason was no exception. But even if she wasn't exactly happy, she was at least comfortable as he provided for her quite well and was a good lay, which was a good bonus.

Mia told her boyfriend about her sister's wedding and he encouraged her to go and try to smooth things out and fix their relationship.

This however came from a place of cluelessness. Jason would have never encouraged her to do that if he knew all the facts. Mia just told him that they fell out some time after their parents passed and that they haven't talked since.

Based on what Mia told him, it seemed like their falling out was random and such an overreaction and maybe even petty. And Mia was going to keep it that way, she didn't need him knowing the truth.

So being the good boyfriend that Jason was, he helped her find out where the wedding was happening and booked some flights in hopes that Y/n and Mia could reconnect again because he always felt so bad knowing that Mia had no family to turn to.

This was how Mia found herself at the beautiful venue where Y/n was getting married, only to get escorted out by guards before she even made it to the front entrance. She was a little annoyed that she didn't get in and that Y/n specifically made sure she didn't get in.

Or at least it seemed that way. Like a personal attack on her, that she was shooed away before she got anywhere near the property. The celebration. Was it really so bad to want to celebrate her sister?

Mia now fully gave up any hope of ever reconnecting with Y/n, realising that she also needs to move on with her life, as it seemed everyone else already has... Leaving her behind.

Well this is the end of the road. Took just over a year to finish this story with all the big gaps between chapters. It was fun writing this book, especially when it got to the drama :)

Any feedback is welcome

All the best
