The two days Hitori had to wait to see Ru and Koja were agonizing. She was excited to see them but nervous as well. Her mind was racing with questions. What had they endured after she was gone? Had Sora left scars on them like he had her? Were they okay? How much had they changed? Were they angry with her for leaving them behind?
When the day finally came, Aizawa took Hitori out of class after lunch. She couldn't sit still the entire drive. Aizawa glanced at her a couple of times but didn't say anything until they reached the house where Ru and Koja were living now. It was an average house in an average suburb. The exact opposite of what they had all grown up in.
Aizawa parked the car on the street in front of the house and turned it off. But before Hitori could jump out, he stopped her.
"Hitori, wait a second."
"What?" She snapped impatiently.
"They don't know how to trust anyone. You'll need to teach them how to do that."
Hitori frowned sadly and looked down. "Yeah, I know. But I'm worried they won't even trust me anymore."
"I don't think that's the case," Aizawa said. He put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Yes, it's been a long time since you saw them. But Hitori, you're their hero. You rescued them from Sora. I made sure they knew that when I picked them up from school on Monday. Koja even recognized me from the press conference. And he was excited to meet a hero that you were with."
"Really?" Hitori asked hopefully.
"Yes," Aizawa smiled softly. "Let's go inside."
Hitori got out of the car and waited for Aizawa to walk around the car. Then she followed him up the walkway to the front door. After he knocked on the door, they only had to wait a moment before it opened and revealed a woman in her mid-thirties.
"Aizawa, good to see you," the woman said. She was an inch or two taller than Hitori, had long brown hair, and soft green eyes. "Please, come in."
"Thank you, Mrs. Okamura," Aizawa said as he stepped inside. Hitori followed suit, and the woman shut the door behind them.
"You must be Hitori," Mrs. Okamura said. She smiled kindly. "I'm happy to see you're doing well. When I heard that Ru and Koja have an older sister, I was worried that you needed a home as well. I was relieved to hear that you were already living in a stable home."
Stable seems like a stretch.
"Thanks," Hitori said quietly. "Nice to meet you, Mrs. Okamura."
"Call me Maiko."
"How are the boys doing?" Aizawa asked.
"A bit better today. Koja is talking a bit more. Ru still hasn't spoken much, though."
"Where are they?" Hitori asked quickly. It was obvious the boys were scared, and she desperately wanted to reassure them that they were safe.
"Upstairs, first door on the left." Maiko smiled. "They don't know you're coming. I thought it would be a good surprise. But they've both asked about seeing you."
"Thank you."
Hitori took her shoes off and dashed upstairs to the second floor. She found herself in a short hallway with four doors leading off of it. She turned toward the one on the left and lightly knocked on the door, using the special knock that she had used so many times in the dojo. But there was silence on the other side.
She took a deep breath and opened the door. It opened into a brightly lit room with a bunk bed in the corner. Two boys sat on the rug in the middle of the room, staring wide-eyed at Hitori.
