Koraichi led them over to the elevators, giving a lengthy explanation of all the new equipment that the hospital had purchased the entire way. Hitori asked a few questions here and there about how the hospital used certain things for disease identification, and the process behind it. Most of it went over her head, but there were a few things she understood.

They took the elevator to the basement and went down a long hallway to a lab toward the back of the hospital. It was obvious that patients or visitors rarely stepped foot into the basement of the building. The only other people down there were nurses collecting supplies. It was a completely different vibe than it had been upstairs.

Koraichi's lab was near the exit in the far corner. She unlocked the door and stepped inside, allowing Hawks and Hitori to enter before she shut the door behind them.

"This is my personal lab!" Koraichi smiled widely and brandished her hands. "This is where the diagnostic magic happens!"

The room was small but not uncomfortable. Everything seemed shiny and new. Machines whirred and clicked, a few were actively printing out long result sheets. The back wall was lined with shelves that had a wide variety of vials and bottles. There was a desk in the corner with a file box on it that was packed full of papers. A journal sitting on top caught Hitori's attention. But she couldn't investigate just yet.

"Wow, this is incredible!" Hitori said. She was glad she was still wearing her mask. It made acting a lot easier since she only had to focus on the expressions her eyes showed. She walked over to the PCR machine that was cranking out a result sheet. "Seeing this in action is so cool!"

"I'm currently running a diagnostic on another patient here. We suspect he has a genetic disease, and these are the results of his blood test."

"What does this machine do?" Hawks asked, pointing at another machine. "Sorry, I'm not as well-versed in this sort of thing as Reality is."

Koraichi smiled widely. "Not a problem! That's a centrifuge."

The doctor launched into a lengthy explanation of how the machine worked and what they used it for. Hitori took the chance to wander around the lab and check out the rest of the equipment. She had to admit, it was all pretty cool. She slowly made her way over to the desk while Hawks kept Koraichi occupied.

Hitori picked up the journal and quickly thumbed through it. Just like Hawks had said, every single one of the doctor's experimental drugs had been carefully detailed, dating back a decade. She clenched her jaw and tucked the book into one of the large pockets in her pants as she turned around and walked toward the shelves.

"What's in all the vials?" Hitori asked, pointing at a set that had every color of the rainbow in it.

Koraichi looked over her shoulder and smiled. "Oh, those are just samples I've collected over the years."

"Samples of what?" Hawks asked curiously.

"Well, this is kind of gross, but they're mostly bodily fluids from patients that have been diagnosed with rare diseases," Koraichi explained. She was smiling nervously. "They're nothing special though."

"Rare diseases?" Hitori prodded. "That's really cool. So you do research on stuff like that?"

"Yes, when I'm not treating patients."

"That type of work is really important in the medical industry," Hawks said. His eyes glinted dangerously above an easy smile. "New medications are always improving the quality of life for people."

"I'm so glad you understand that," Koraichi said. "Most people don't get it nowadays. So many companies keep their drugs under lock and key, and a lot of people suffer from it. I wish there was more transparency in the medical field."
