Chapter 9
Only a moment had passed since she had fallen asleep. A wind came up and blew away the clouds that covered what was surely the moon. But of course it wasn’t the moon, but rather a giant glowing duck head. It looked at Sallymae and said, “Sing!”.
Sallymae noticed that the furry beings had returned and were everywhere. “Sing!” they echoed, and Sallymae decided to go ahead and do just that.
“After all,” she thought, “I’m starting to get used to this sort of thing.” With that, she stood up and cleared her throat. The furry beings pulled out instruments from behind their backs, and played, as Sallymae began:
“As we go along
(As in this song)
We might discover
A cow for a lover
As a positive virtue
Or a negative clue
To distant borders
Or tape recorders
Used for notes of fate
Or deceptive bait.”
She repeated the words over and over several times. A huge chorus of furry beings joined the instrument players, and began to sing oohs and ahhs in the background.
While she was singing, Sallymae was thinking, “That man in the dressing room at the arena where I sang, was wrong. He said that any attempts to further my superstardom would be disastrous. If only he could see me now!”
The song ended, and Sallymae felt warm compassion for the furry creatures who had accompanied her. She looked at them sweetly.
But the furry creatures looked at her strangely, and started growling.
“Why should you be the superstar?” jeered one of them.
“Who do you think you are?” sneered others.
Soon they were all yelling at Sallymae. She looked up into the sky to the duck head for help, but the clouds had covered it up again.
She looked everywhere for a way out, but found none. Then an arm came from the water by the corn cob raft, and grabbed one of Sallymae’s legs and began tugging at her.
“That isn’t very polite,” said Sallymae to the arm, as it pulled her underwater.
