A few hours later, Sallymae felt herself lifted off the floor and carried out of the van.
There was the sound of a huge crowd cheering and applauding as Sallymae was set down on some sort of platform. She was then ungagged, untied and unblindfolded, and discovered she was at center stage in a huge arena filled with hundreds of thousands of people.
A voice came over the loudspeaker system saying, “And now for the latest and greatest superstar, Sallymae Hogsby!”
The crowd went wild as Sallymae just stood there, not knowing what to do. Then breathtakingly beautiful music began to play that she had heard somewhere before. She couldn’t help herself and started dancing and singing with the music. The words just flowed out of her mouth, without any thought:
The cow of reason
Creates a season
With pillars of fire
And corn cob desire.
Expanding eyes
And gyrating tail
While pigs all swoon
And fly to the moon.
The gods of the field
Run and kiss the cow
While the bulls all cry
As the pigs fly by.
And above it all
In a sky of corn
A duck’s head knows
How a future glows.
The music ended and the crowd was ecstatic. Never had they experienced such beautiful singing.
Sallymae was then ushered to a dressing room. A man was sitting there who said, “This was your big moment, where you were at the right place at the right time. Any attempts to further your superstardom will be disastrous.”
“Well!” said Sallymae indignantly, “I don’t know or care who you are, but I don’t see how there any way you would be able to know such a thing.”
With that she marched out of the dressing room and back to the stage. The crowd was thrilled that Sallymae was back, and they grew quiet to hear more of her beautiful singing.
The same breathtakingly beautiful music began to play. She couldn’t help herself and started dancing. But instead of singing, the sound that came out of her mouth was the quacking of a duck.
A wave of indignant shock went thru the crowd, when then began yelling rude things at Sallymae as they walked out of the arena. Sallymae began to cry and ran off the stage and out of the arena.
She came upon a man sitting on a stump starting at his feet. He stood up, looked up at Sallymae and said, “Most people never realize how marvelous feet are. But I can tell by the look in your eyes that you appreciate your feet to the fullest extent.”
Sallymae had never really given her feet much thought, but decided to fake it.
“Of course, feet are very special,” she began, “I’ve always said that they are symbolic of the unity of life.”
“You fool!” cried the man, “I know all along that you have never really given your feet much thought, so I wanted to see you make an idiot out of yourself.” With that, the man sat back down on the stump and stared at his feet again, completely ignoring Sallymae. After a few minutes, Sallymae decided to ignore him right back and continue on her way.
