PENELOPE

I gave myself a final, satisfied glance in the mirror. The dress hugged me in all the right places—an ankle-length bodycon in dark pink with a delicate net overlay. The high neck and full sleeves made it elegant, and the belt cinched my waist just the way I wanted. I kept my hair simple, tied back in a sleek bun, and opted for minimal makeup, just enough to highlight my features. Diamond earrings dangled from my ears, catching the light. I picked up the silver clutch from my dresser, letting out a breath. I look fine, I told myself, but my heart still beat a little faster than it should.

Walking downstairs, the click of my heels echoed in the hallway until I reached the living room, where my mom was sitting, flipping through a magazine. She looked up as I entered, her eyes narrowing slightly with curiosity.
"Where are you off to?" she asked, a small smile forming as she took in my outfit.

"I'm going to the mayor's party with Adrian," I replied, smoothing down the front of my dress. "Aren’t you coming?"

Mom sighed, resting the magazine in her lap. "Your father isn’t back yet, and honestly, I don’t feel like going without him." Her smile widened. "Besides, you're going, so that’s good enough."

I nodded, trying to shake off the nerves bubbling in my stomach. Mom’s eyes softened as she looked at me, pride and something else—maybe concern—flickering across her face.

"You look beautiful, Penelope," she said softly, leaning forward. "I’m happy to see you with the man you love, but just… be careful, okay?"

"I really don't care about the fact that you're dating the Anderson's enemy but I just want you be careful "

Her words lingered in the air, the caution behind them unmistakable. I gave her a quick hum in response, trying to hide the sudden tightness in my chest. "I will," I promised, though I wasn’t entirely sure if I meant it. I turned on my heel and headed for the door, shaking the feeling off.

As soon as I stepped outside, the cool evening air kissed my skin, and there he was—Adrian. He leaned casually against his sleek black Porsche, his dark blue three-piece suit clinging to him like it was tailored for just this moment. His hair was combed back, not a strand out of place, and his eyes glinted in the dimming light as he straightened up at the sight of me.

He didn’t say anything at first, just opened the passenger door with a fluid, gentlemanly gesture. I walked toward him, trying to ignore the little flutter in my stomach, and slipped inside the car without a word. The soft leather seat welcomed me, and Adrian slid into the driver’s side a second later, closing the door with a solid click.

He glanced over at me, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "You look… really pretty tonight," he said, his tone smooth, though there was something warm about it.

"Thanks," I replied quietly, glancing out the window as the car pulled away from the curb, the streetlights flickering past us like a blur.

As we drove into the night, I couldn’t help but wonder how much of this was real, and how much of it was just part of the game I’d set in motion.
