PENELOPE
As soon as the car stopped in front of the house, I pushed the door open before the driver could get to it.
Bad idea.
The moment my heels touched the ground, the alcohol in my system reminded me of its existence. The world tilted slightly. My vision blurred.
I took two steps.
Then my heel caught against a loose stone.
Pain shot through my ankle.
A gasp escaped my lips as my balance disappeared beneath me.
I braced for impact.
It never came.
Strong arms wrapped around me before I could hit the ground.
My breath caught.
Slowly, my vision cleared, and I found myself staring directly into a pair of familiar grey eyes.
Sean.
"You never learn from your mistakes, do you?"
His voice was low, carrying equal parts irritation and concern.
Before I could protest, he slid one arm beneath my knees and lifted me effortlessly into his arms.
My hands instinctively wrapped around his neck.
He shook his head in silent disapproval and carried me inside.
The mansion was quiet.
The staff had long retired for the night, leaving only the soft glow of wall sconces illuminating the grand hallways.
The silence felt strangely intimate.
Dangerously intimate.
Sean walked straight to the living room and lowered me onto the sofa with surprising gentleness.
Then he fixed me with a hard stare.
The kind that made CEOs tremble.
"You move from this spot," he said slowly, "and I swear I'll tie you to my bed and lock you in my room."
My eyes widened.
The frightening part wasn't the threat.
It was the fact that I believed every single word.
Like a guilty child, I nodded.
Satisfied, he disappeared toward the kitchen.
A few minutes later he returned carrying an ice pack.
Without a word, he crouched down in front of me.
My breath hitched.
Sean Anderson.
The man who controlled half the city.
The man whose name could make boardrooms fall silent.
The king of Los Angeles.
On his knees.
For me.
The sight alone made something dangerous stir inside my chest.
Carefully, he lifted my injured foot onto his lap.
The moment his fingers brushed the swollen skin, I flinched.
His expression instantly darkened.
Not at me.
At the injury.
