PENELOPE

Sophie walked upstairs without another word, and I followed her quietly.

Like a lost puppy.

For the first time in years, I had no idea what to say to my sister.

No idea where to begin.

No idea how to fix something that had been broken for so long.

My eyes wandered around the familiar hallway as I followed her.

Nothing had changed.

The same paintings hung on the walls.

The same soft lighting illuminated the corridor.

The same scent of home lingered in the air.

And suddenly-

I realized how much I had missed this place.

This house.

My home.

It had only been a few weeks, but it felt like years.
Sophie pushed open her bedroom door and walked inside.

Naturally, I followed.

The room was exactly as I remembered.

Elegant.

Organized.

Perfect.

Just like her.

I quietly closed the door behind me.

The soft click echoed through the silence.
Neither of us spoke.

Sophie slipped off her heels and placed them neatly beside the dresser.

I kicked mine off too.

Then climbed onto her bed and sat cross-legged in the middle of it like I used to when we were younger.

The familiarity made my chest ache.

Sophie stood in front of the mirror removing her earrings slowly.

She looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like the weight of the world had settled on her shoulders.

For a moment neither of us spoke.

Then finally-

"I'm sorry."

The words came out barely above a whisper.
Sophie paused.

Her hand froze halfway to her necklace.

Then she slowly turned toward me.

Her expression was calm.

Too calm.

"That night at dinner..." My voice trembled. "I was very harsh."

A faint smile touched her lips.

"It's okay."

She looked away briefly before adding,
"I won't pretend I didn't deserve some of it."

The honesty in her voice made my throat tighten.
"You're not upset?" I asked quietly.

Sophie laughed softly.

A sad laugh.

"Not because of that."

Her eyes met mine.

"I'm upset because you kept things from me."
The words hit harder than I expected.
