PENELOPE
I was happy.
No-that wasn't the right word.
I was ridiculously, embarrassingly happy.
The kind of happy that made me grin at my reflection every five seconds while getting ready. The kind that made my stomach flutter with nervous excitement.
After applying the final swipe of lipstick, I leaned closer to the mirror and inspected myself for what had to be the hundredth time.
Today had to be perfect.
No mistakes.
No second-guessing.
No running away.
My gaze traveled over my outfit.
A deep crimson two-piece set hugged my body perfectly. The sleeveless crop top featured a plunging neckline that accentuated my collarbones and the delicate gold chain resting against my skin. The matching flowing skirt sat high on my waist before cascading down to my ankles, a daring thigh-high slit exposing one long leg every time I moved.
It was bold.
Confident.
Dangerous.
The kind of outfit that demanded attention.
I paired it with elegant red flats adorned with delicate bows and matching floral earrings crafted from crimson satin petals. My makeup was soft yet glamorous-rosy cheeks, long lashes, and glossy nude lips that made my eyes stand out.
For the first time in years, I felt beautiful.
Not because someone told me I was.
But because I wanted to.
I ran a brush through my hair, letting the silky strands fall freely over my shoulders.
A small smile tugged at my lips.
Sean always said red looked beautiful on me.
That was exactly why I had chosen it.
Though he would probably appreciate the outfit far more than the destination.
A laugh escaped me.
Sean Anderson and beaches were natural enemies.
The man loved order.
Control.
Schedules.
Cleanliness.
Meanwhile beaches were filled with sand, saltwater, wind, and unpredictability.
Everything he hated.
Everything I loved.
Years ago, I would have changed the plan immediately.
I would have picked a restaurant he liked.
A place he preferred.
A date designed around his comfort.
But not anymore.
Relationships weren't supposed to be one person constantly compromising.
If Sean wanted a second chance, then he needed to learn my world too.
Just like I had learned his.
And today?
Today was a test.
A small one.
But a test nonetheless.
I wanted to see how far his patience stretched.
