PENELOPE

I shot to my feet, heart pounding, my mind racing to catch up with what Sophie had just said. But the look in her eyes-filled with guilt and regret-confirmed my worst fear. She wasn't lying. She wasn't joking. She had known all along.

My voice came out as a whisper, barely audible over the rapid thudding of my pulse. "What did you just say?"

Sophie blinked, her eyes wide, suddenly sobering up. "What? Nothing." She shook her head like a child caught in a lie, her words hurried and unsure.
"Don't lie to me, Sophie," I said, my voice trembling with disbelief.

"I'm not," she whined, her tone desperate.

I couldn't take it. I couldn't stand the way she was acting as if nothing was wrong. "Sophie, please," I pleaded, tears already brimming in my eyes. "Don't play games with me." A single tear slipped down my cheek, and I saw her flinch as if my pain were a tangible thing she could feel.
"I'm sorry..." she whispered, her words barely audible.

The floor seemed to tilt beneath me as her apology sunk in. My breath hitched, my chest constricting with the weight of her betrayal. "Sorry?" I repeated, laughing bitterly. "What are you sorry for, Sophie? Sorry for lying to me? For keeping secrets? For making a fool out of me?"

My voice grew louder, shaking with the force of my emotions, my words spilling out uncontrollably. I could feel my heart pounding in my throat, the overwhelming pain threatening to swallow me whole.

"I didn't mean to..." she mumbled, her voice weak.

"Oh really? Then what did you mean to do?" I shouted, my hands shaking as the tears streamed down my face. "You meant to lie to me! You meant to keep me in the dark! While I was feeling guilty-GUILTY-for hiding my past with Sean from you, you were laughing behind my back! You and Sean, having your fun while I tore myself apart for your happiness!"

"No..." she whispered, stepping toward me, reaching out for my hand. But I yanked it away, the touch of her skin like fire against mine.

Silent tears rolled down my cheeks as the realization hit me like a wave, the betrayal suffocating. I had been drowning in guilt, terrified that if Sophie ever knew the truth about Sean and me, she would be devastated. I had convinced myself that she would hate me, that it would break her heart to know that the man she loved had once been mine. But all this time-all this time-she had known. And still, she said nothing.

"If you knew... then did you betray me with Sean? Did you both plan this?" My voice cracked as the words left my mouth, and I watched as her face twisted with anguish.

"No, not at all!" she said quickly, shaking her head in denial.

"Then why didn't you tell me?" I yelled, my voice raw with emotion. "Why didn't you say something? Why didn't you tell me you knew about Sean and me? Aren't we twins, Sophie? Aren't we supposed to be each other's other half? Don't I deserve to know?"

Her eyes flashed with something-anger, maybe guilt-but she didn't back down. "In that case," she shot back, her voice rising, "don't I deserve to know too? You loved Sean, you were dating him, and you never told me! You kept it from me! Why, huh? Why didn't you tell me first?"
