"Can I have a dog?" I ask Giovanni whilst we sit on the sofas waiting for Noah to come downstairs so we can go to school.

"Let me think about it," he doesn't look up from his phone, "no."

"Why not?" I sit up from where I'd been lying down.

"Messy," is his only reply.

"Taylor's messy but we still keep him," I shrug.

That gets him to look up from his phone and he laughs.

I really do love Giovanni, however I have noticed that he's very uptight when we're not at home and laughs from him are rare. So, I cherish every one I get to hear - especially the ones I cause.

I grin as he laughs.

"You're lucky he didn't hear that," he looks over at me, still smiling.

"Yeah, I'm going to tell him you said that later," Noah casually walks down the stairs as if we aren't going to be late.

"Snitch," I scowl.

"Bitch," he points over at me.

"Five dollars!" There's a distant shout and I laugh at Noah's annoyed face.

"Don't call your sister a bitch," Giovanni scolds half-heartedly as he looks back down at his phone.

He must be busy with work.

That reminds me, I never asked what he does.

"Five dollars!" There's another shout.

"Doesn't count, I was parenting," Giovanni shouts back.

I've decided that the best way to deal with the guilt of yesterday is to avoid thinking of it.

So that's what I'm trying to do.

"I would look after the dog, though," I tell Giovanni as I open the car door.

He looks over at me, "sure you would."

"I would!" I exclaim.

"Okay, Chiara," he says, unconvinced.

"If I prove to you that I can look after a dog, can I have one?" I question as he starts the car.

He reverses out of the driveway, "how would you prove it?"

"Umm," I think for a second, "I don't know."

"Exactly, no dog."

"A dog would be cool," Noah voices.

"No," Giovanni shakes his head.

"I would name it," I ignore what he said and try to think of a name.

"Giraffe!" Noah shouts.

"I would not name it 'Giraffe'," I shake my head.
