Chapter 3

(Vanessa’s POV)

We were all enjoying a nice breakfast at our resort. The kids were loving Disneyland! I just loved spending every moment with the three people that I love the absolute most. “Mommy the waffles look like Mickey Mouse!” KJ said excitedly. “I know sweetie, isn’t that cool?” He nodded eating his cut up sausages with his fingers. “You like your breakfast Chrissy?” Kenneth asked.

“Mm-hmm!” she expressed with her mouth full of scrambled eggs. I started feeding KJ his waffles. He was messy if you let him be, and I wasn’t taking that chance. “Mommy?” Christina called.

“Yes sweetie,” I answered taking my eyes away from KJ’s mouth to Christina’s hazel eyes. “Can you tell us the story of how you and daddy met again?”

“Again? Honey you’ve heard that story so many times you can tell it yourself!” I exclaimed jokingly.

“Well…I like hearing it. Please mom?”

“Yaaaay! Story!” KJ sang with a mouth full of chewed waffle and clapping with his sticky syrup hands. “KJ, don’t talk with food in your mouth, it’s rude,” Kenneth said with a mouth full of food himself. Me and my daughter shared a look. I knew we were thinking the same thing. Men, SMH. “Okay, I’ll tell you the story/ Sure.” Her eyes popped as if she was ready to soak up all the information like a sponge. “I remember it like this. Your father was dating this actress named LisaRaye McCoy.” I shot Kenneth a look that made him laugh. Let’s just say one way or another I would have gotten him, and he knows it. “Anyway, at the time I was the assistant to one of the biggest fashion designers, Oscar de la Renta. I was 20 and I didn’t go to college for too long, but I knew fashion like the back of my hand. So when I approached him wanting a job, well let’s just say I was lucky.”

“Where does daddy come in?” Christina asked anxiously.

“Yeah, where does the star come in?” Kenneth chimed in. I rolled my eyes jokingly. “I’m getting to him, wait. Ya gotta have background information!” I took a sip of my tea. I cleared my throat dramatically. “Now, I was backstage to a charity event that Ms. McCoy was hosting. She had yet to arrive and my boss was stuck at an airport in Europe.” I laughed reminiscing on the hell I went through that day. “Oh Chrissy it was a disaster! I remember I was in the room pacing back and forth freaking out… and in walked your father.” I looked at Kenny who smiled at me. I could tell her remembered just as I did. We remembered it like it was only yesterday.

“Excuse me, no one is supposed to be back here sir,” I said to the tall light skinned man who just walked in. He continued walking around, as if you would walk around an art museum. Hands behind his back looking around, ignoring everything I just said. “Yo! Hello??? Big guy, are you deaf? Nobody’s supposed to be here!”

“Who are you supposed to be Deborah Cox?” he said in a deep voice that captured me for a few moments. Then it hit me how much of a sarcastic asshole he was. “Ha ha, very funny. Leave before I call security, I’m warning you.”

“Security?” He started laughing with such a cockiness that poked at my nerves. “Lady you obviously don’t know who I am so I’ll introduce myseld. Kenneth Combs, Point Guard for the LA Lakers.” He extended his arm to me as if I was supposed to shake it. “Okay, and? Am I supposed to be impressed?”

“I’m also LisaRaye’s boyfriend.” I stood there turning red feeling stupid as hell. “Oh Mr. Combs, I’m so sorry.”

“It’s cool. You don’t know any better. You got spunk though, I like that.” I cracked a tiny smile until the time reminded me of my job. “Listen do you know how far away Ms, McCoy is?”
