Chapter 13
(Darryl’s POV)
~A Few Days Later~
I sat across from him waiting for an explanation. He just sat there with the menu in his face. “Kenneth!” I yelled finally making him jump a little.
“What girl?” he asked with an attitude.
“You still haven’t told me what we’re doing here,” I said folding me arms.
“I was hungry,” he said nonchalantly.
“Well I’m not hungry. I thought we were going shopping for Keith!” I yelled.
“I did it yesterday online. We’re good.”
“Without my input?” I asked. He continued flipping through his menu. I was growing irritated. Who the hell did he think he was? I snatched the menu from him sharply. “Look Kenny. I don’t know if my mom let you carry on like this with her, but I’m not her aright? I get it. You’re Kenneth Combs. That don’t mean shit to me! Keith is more my son than yours so if you want to deal with him in any sort of manner, you need to consult me first.” He looked at me a little taken aback. As a matter of fact, I had more to get off my chest. “And this lil cocky attitude you got. You ain’t cute Kenny! Cut that shit out. You act like a damn child with that cockiness. You play ball and as a matter of fact, you don’t do that anymore, so your cockiness needs to go out the window with your career.” I opened my menu fiercely and looked through the dishes. He smiled and reopened his menu. His chuckling kept irritating me. I put my menu down and just glared at him. “What’s funny Kenny?” I asked with an attitude. He shook his head as to say nothing. “Then what are you over there laughing at?” I asked. Was he making a joke out of me? I hated when he didn’t take me seriously. “Nothing,” he started. “It’s just, since you’ve been here I’ve been trying to understand what it was that I saw in you,” he said plainly. My mouth dropped in astonishment. “No! Not like that!” he quickly said. “What I mean is, from day one you always kept it one hunnit. I never had to worry about you wanting me for the money or the fame. You didn’t feed my ego like I was use to.” He flashed that immaculate smile at me and I desperately wanted to smile back. I couldn’t though. This was wrong. This feeling was wrong. Me being here with him right now was wrong. This was my mother’s husband. My stepdad is my ex boyfriend and the father of my child. That’s a theme for Maury! Oh God… I’m going to hell. I know it—I just know it. “What’s going on with you and my mom?” I asked. He ignored me. He was doing it on purpose. He just continued flipping through that menu. “Kenny! I know you hear me talking to you!” I yelled.
“Keep your voice down!” he said aggressively. I shot a look at him. A nigga I know you ain’t talkin to me look. He sighed. “I’m sorry. Look. I really don’t wanna talk about Vanessa right now.”
“Why not? What’s going on with ya’ll?” I asked.
“What makes you think something’s going on?” he asked nonchalantly.
I scoffed, “Come on Kenneth. She’s been in the house moping around for the past couple of days. Yesterday I walked in on her in her room and she was under the covers crying. Then you’re never home. You’re always out with me or your boys or the kids. Something’s going on. Is it me?”
“It has nothing to do with you…. If anything you’re the reason why I’m finally thinking straight.” Our waitress came to our table and took our orders. She walked off as Kenneth watched her big round booty jiggle away. I kicked him under the table. “Awwwh! For what?” he groaned.
“One, my mom’s ass is bigger than hers so your eyes need not be on her rear end. Two, I am sitting right here you ho! At least has some respect for me.”
