Sevenweriuz's POV
"This is Mrs. Shirley Villapuerte and Mr. Laurence Villapuerte, you know them, right? They'll be your new parents." Sister Nara said, her voice gentle. Napatitig naman ako sa dalawang tao na sa harapan ko.
What does she mean, my new parents?
I saw the woman bow slightly toward me, a soft smile on her face. She looked like an angel.
"Hi, darling! I'm Shirley. I'll be your new mommy from now on," she said, playfully ruffling my hair. I felt something warm touch my heart, it reminded me of how Sister Nara used to do that whenever I did chores.
I felt my cheeks warm with excitement. I glanced at the man beside her, he was smiling quietly, simply watching us.
"Be good to them, okay? Alam ko namang mabait kang bata but don't give them any trouble," Sister Nara reminded me as she packed up my things. I didn't have much, so it didn't take long.
"Why me?" I asked, once my backpack was on. I looked out the window and saw the couple waiting for me beside their expensive car. They are rich, they used to give donations here.
"Hmm?"
"Why did they choose me? There are so many kids here... I'm already twelve years old. Not many people adopt someone my age-" She cut me off, ruffling my hair just like the woman did earlier.
"Ikaw talagang bata ka. Why not you? Maybe they saw how kind you are and thought you wouldn't be difficult to raise. And isn't it nice? You've been seeing them for five years-they visit every year to give donations. I know they've been observing who's the right child to adopt. Mabait silang tao."
Since Sister Nara was the only one I was close to, she was the only one who brought me to my new so-called parents.
When we arrived at their house, I was in awe. I'd only seen something like this in books, a mansion. There was a fountain in front, a huge white house, and beautiful trees lined along the driveway.
"This will be your new home, darling! We'll buy you whatever you want, right honey?" the woman said cheerfully, glancing at the man driving. I still wasn't comfortable calling them my parents.
He smiled. "Yeah, of course."
I didn't realize how lucky I was to be adopted. They bought me toys even when I didn't ask for them. They spoiled me, threw a party when I turned thirteen.
"Happy birthday, Ven! Here's your gift, open it later, okay?" Mom said, hugging me. Dad followed, greeting me with another gift. A year had passed since they adopted me and all I could think was... this is heaven.
But as they say, 'Huwag magsalita ng tapos.' Whoever coined that phrase was right. My so-called heaven turned into hell.
It was December. Mom's birthday, she entered my room at 11 PM, holding a wine bottle. She staggered toward me. I rubbed my eyes, frowning.
"Mom?"
She sat on my bed, her face flushed, she was clearly drunk. Where's Dad?
She gulped down the wine before speaking. "L-Laurence might be cheating on me, Ven... He's not here... When I called him earlier, a woman answered... said he was in the bathroom... I knew this day would come... on my birthday..." she sobbed, then took another drink.
Dad? Cheating? That's impossible. I'd seen how he loved her, just a year living with them and I already knew. The way he looked at her... it was like he could give her the world. Baka naman secretary ni Dad iyon, may pamilya na rin naman ang babae so there's no way they would cheat.
