The Monastery was peaceful at night, the flickering candles casting warm glows along the stone walls. Most of the team had retreated to their rooms, but Kai and Cole found themselves in the main hall, sitting across from each other on the low stone steps.
The air between them was quiet, but not awkward just full of that unspoken weight that had been growing ever since the battle against the Skull Sorcerer. It wasn’t unusual for them to sit like this, alone, but tonight felt different. Maybe it was the way the light hit Cole’s face or how close they wer but there was a quiet tension that neither of them wanted to address.
Kai leaned back against the cool stone, arms crossed, looking up at the wooden beams above them. “You’ve been quiet tonight.”
“Just thinking,” Cole replied, not looking at him. He stared down at his hands, tracing invisible lines on his palm. “About everything that happened, I guess. How close we all came to losing.”
Kai was silent for a moment, his gaze flicking to Cole. “We didn’t lose, though. We’re all still here.”
“I know.” Cole’s voice softened. “But it wasn’t just the fight... it’s the thought of how things could change in a second. I don’t want to keep taking this for granted, you know?”
Kai shifted slightly, his chest tightening. He was used to fighting, to battles. But this feeling? It was new. He didn’t know how to navigate it, how to let Cole know without saying too much.
Without thinking, Kai moved closer, the familiar warmth of his presence filling the space between them. “You’re not gonna lose me, Cole. Not ever.”
Cole finally looked up, and their eyes met. For a moment, everything seemed to stand still. Kai’s heart skipped a beat. Cole’s gaze was steady, but there was something deeper there now a softness, an understanding that was more than just friendship.
“Promise?” Cole asked quietly, his voice almost a whisper.
Kai didn’t hesitate. He leaned in, just slightly, as if testing the air, his breath warm against Cole’s face. “Yeah,” he murmured. “I promise.”
And before either of them could stop it, the distance between them vanished. Kai’s lips met Cole’s, soft and gentle at first, like the first touch of fire to a cool stone. There was no urgency, no rush just the quiet intensity of everything they had both been holding back.
Cole’s hand rested lightly on Kai’s shoulder, the warmth of his touch grounding Kai in that moment. He deepened the kiss, and Cole responded, his fingers threading through Kai’s hair, pulling him closer as if to make sure this was real.
The kiss was full of unspoken words, of things they had never said aloud but both understood. It was a promise, a shared comfort, a quiet declaration that neither of them had to face the world alone anymore.
When they finally pulled away, both of them were breathless, eyes meeting with something new something raw and tender that hadn’t been there before.
“About time,” Kai muttered, his usual cocky grin returning, though it was softer, more vulnerable than usual.
Cole chuckled, a bit embarrassed but more than content. “Yeah, I guess so.”
“Don’t think you’re getting away with just one kiss,” Kai teased, nudging him with his shoulder.
Cole raised an eyebrow, a smile tugging at his lips. “Oh, is that so?”
Kai leaned in again, this time with a bit more confidence, but before their lips could meet, Cole put a finger to his lips. “You’re going to be insufferable about this, aren’t you?”
Kai smirked. “Probably. But you like it.”
Cole shook his head but couldn’t hide his smile. “You’re lucky you’re cute.”
“Lucky? Nah,” Kai said with a wink. “I know what I’ve got.”
Cole laughed softly, his heart light in a way he hadn’t realized it had been in so long. “Alright, alright, you win.”
“Of course, I always win" Kai said, pulling him into another kiss this time deeper, more sure, as if to seal that unspoken promise they’d just made.
And as they finally pulled back, both of them knew that this was just the beginning.
