The room was quiet except for the soft clinks of buttons and rhythmic background music from the handheld game console in Cole's hands. He was sprawled across his bed, legs crossed, leaning back against the wall with his shoulders relaxed. The gentle hum of wind outside the monastery blended with the faint sounds of gameplay completely peaceful.
He didn't hear Kai come in at first.
It was only when the bed dipped slightly near his legs that he glanced away from the screen and saw Kai crawling up with that sleepy, stubborn look on his face. Hair tousled, eyes heavy-lidded, hoodie sleeves covering half his hands and a blanket wrapped around his shoulders.
Cole smiled.
Kai didn't say anything. He just climbed right up and gently dropped himself onto Cole's chest like a tired cat claiming its spot. His cheek rested against the solid warmth of Cole's torso, arms loosely curled around his ribs. He gave the faintest sigh as if melting into place, finally settled.
Cole chuckled, shifting only slightly to make room for him. "You're gonna mess up my game, hothead."
Kai muttered something unintelligible into his shirt.
Cole shook his head with a grin and tilted the console so he could keep playing around Kai's weight. The fire ninja was warm and soft where he lay, his breath slow and steady, like he'd been trying to find peace all day and had finally found it right there on Cole's chest.
Cole could feel the rhythm of Kai's breathing sync with his own.
Time passed. The level changed. Cole adjusted his grip on the console but never moved Kai. Every so often, he'd glance down to find Kai fully asleep now, lips slightly parted, one hand twitching from a dream. His heart melted a little more with every minute.
Eventually, Cole sighed and whispered, "Okay, game over." He saved his progress and powered it off, screen going dark.
He tilted his head to look at Kai. "Babe. I'm gonna go grab some water."
Kai didn't budge.
"C'mon," Cole said softly, nudging his shoulder.
Nothing.
Cole squinted. "Kai?"
A soft snore was his only answer.
Cole blinked, amused and touched all at once. He ran a hand up Kai's back gently, feeling how relaxed he was completely asleep, nestled into him like he belonged there and nowhere else. Cole's chest swelled with affection.
He considered trying to wiggle out from under him, but... no. Not tonight.
With a soft smile, he leaned back again, folding his arms loosely around Kai's shoulders. "Alright, alright. You win."
Kai murmured something again in his sleep and burrowed closer.
Cole closed his eyes and rested his cheek lightly against Kai's hair.
He didn't need water that badly, anyway.
