Too much silence.
He found Kai curled up in bed, half-buried under a heap of blankets, flushed and scowling at nothing.
"Kai?" Cole asked, stepping into the room.
Kai groaned and turned his face into the pillow. "Go away. I'm dying."
Cole blinked. "Okay, so dramatic. You're definitely still you."
Kai weakly flipped him off without looking. "I'm allowed to be dramatic when my skull is melting from the inside out."
Cole walked over and crouched beside the bed, brushing sweat-dampened hair from Kai's forehead. His hand lingered a second too long.
"You're burning up," he muttered, frowning.
"No kidding," Kai croaked. "I'm fire, remember?"
"Even you shouldn't be this warm," Cole said, already reaching for the water on the nightstand. "When did this start?"
Kai shrugged under the blankets. "This morning. Thought it was just a headache. Then I tried to train and almost faceplanted in front of Nya, so I figured bed was the move."
Cole helped him sit up enough to sip the water, steadying him with a hand on his back. "You should've told me."
"You were busy," Kai muttered, voice rough. "Didn't want to bother you."
Cole's brow furrowed. "You're not a bother. You're my boyfriend. You could literally sneeze and I'd be in here with a thermometer and soup."
Kai huffed a weak laugh. "Guess I'm lucky, then."
"You are," Cole said, pressing a kiss to Kai's temple. "But I'm luckier."
Kai leaned against him, eyes slipping shut. "You're so sappy."
"Deal with it."
For the next hour, Cole stayed at his side-tucking the blankets around him, changing the wet cloth on his forehead, occasionally stroking his fingers through Kai's hair. He even managed to get him to eat half a bowl of broth, though Kai pouted about it the whole time.
Later, when the fever had settled just enough for Kai to stop groaning every five seconds, Cole slid in beside him on the bed, careful not to jostle him too much.
Kai immediately curled into him.
"Still dying?" Cole asked softly.
Kai hummed. "Less. Still dramatic, though."
Cole smiled and kissed his forehead. "Good. You'd be unbearable if you weren't."
Kai looked up at him, eyes glassy but warm. "Thanks for taking care of me."
Cole traced gentle circles along his shoulder. "Always."
"You smell nice," Kai mumbled.
"That's the soup, babe."
Kai snorted. "Well, it's working for me."
They lay there in silence for a while-Kai pressed into Cole's chest, Cole's arms wrapped snug around him, the afternoon light slanting gently through the window.
And even though Kai's head was pounding and his nose was stuffy, being wrapped in Cole's warmth made it all feel a little less awful.
Maybe even... nice.
"I'm gonna make you sick too," Kai mumbled sleepily.
"Worth it," Cole said, and kissed the top of his head again.
