The Noodle Chop was bustling, golden light glowing from lanterns overhead. Steam drifted up from pots and skillets, and the air was thick with the scent of sizzling garlic, roasted chili, and sesame oil.
Kai sat near the end of the counter, a casual grin tugging at his lips as he stirred his noodles. He looked completely at ease, elbow propped on the wooden bar. Across from him, Skylor leaned in with practiced ease, pouring broth into his bowl with a smile that lingered just a moment too long.
“You always get the spicy beef,” she said, brushing a lock of auburn hair behind her ear. “Still got the taste for heat?”
Kai laughed. “Come on, you know me. I am heat.”
Cole sat across the table with Jay and Zane, trying to focus on his food. He’d barely touched it. Every time his eyes flicked up, Skylor was smiling a little too brightly at Kai. She reached across the counter again, this time to place a side dish next to him, her fingers brushing his knuckles in a casual “accident.”
Kai, being Kai, didn’t even notice. He was smiling, nodding, saying thank you unaware of the way Skylor looked at him like she was remembering something old, something warm.
Cole’s stomach twisted. He knew it wasn’t logical Skylor and Kai had history, sure, but that was history. Still… watching her laugh at his boyfriend’s jokes, touch his arm, serve him first it grated like sand in his teeth.
“Dude,” Jay muttered between bites, nudging Cole’s arm. “You okay? You’re stabbing that dumpling like it insulted your ancestors.”
Cole blinked down at his plate, then glanced again at Kai.
Still smiling. Still laughing. Still too damn close.
He pushed his chair back without a word and stood up.
Kai noticed this time. “Hey, where you going?”
“Not hungry,” Cole said shortly, already heading for the door.

The monastery was quiet by the time they got back.
Everyone split off to their rooms, still full and tired from the evening. Kai wandered through the halls slowly, running a hand through his hair. He hadn’t seen Cole much after dinner, and something in the way he left had stuck in Kai’s chest like a loose thread.
He turned a corner and stopped short.
Cole was leaning against the wall just outside their shared room, arms crossed, jaw tight. He wasn’t looking at anything in particular just staring ahead, like his thoughts were too loud to drown out.
Kai approached cautiously. “Hey.”
Cole didn’t move.
“You good?” Kai tried again, voice softer this time.
Cole exhaled through his nose. “She was all over you.”
Kai blinked. “Skylor?”
Cole’s gaze flicked to him, sharp but not angry. Just… tense. “You didn’t see it?”
“I-I mean, I noticed she was being friendly, but-” Kai rubbed the back of his neck. “I wasn’t flirting back. I swear.”
“That’s not the point,” Cole muttered. “You didn’t even realize it.”
Kai stepped closer, brow creased. “Cole…”
“I get it,” Cole said. “You’ve known her forever. You trust her. But watching her look at you like that touch you like that and you just let it happen” His voice cracked slightly. “It sucked.”
