His smile makes my heart flutter, for some unknown reason.
I mentally shake myself out of the trance he's put me in and nervously reach out to shake his hand.

"Hi, I'm Adeline," I mumble, forcing myself to meet his unbearably greeny-blue eyes.

"Nice to meet you, Adeline, as I said I'm Joe and I live across the road from you," His hand moves up and fixes his gorgeous, brown, messy, but perfect hair.
He's cute, suspiciously cute, but I'm always nervous about new people, cute or not cute, so I stare down at the floor, my heart thudding.

I start to realise how awkward this is so I try to start a conversation.

"So, err, do you live at number 36?" I question tentatively.

"Yeah, I room with a guy called Caspar, he's a sweet guy," Joe's voice is smooth and deep, like melted chocolate.

I nod nervously and chew my lip, as an even more awkward silence starts to grow. I scratch my arm and think desperately of something to say. Joe beats me to it.

"Well, I better be going Adeline, nice to meet you. See you!" Joe says, breaking the silence. He smiles, then turns and walks away.

"Bye," I wave and give him a small smile, my cheeks redden a little.
Closing the door I let out a heavy sigh, relieved to be alone.

Now I'm awake, I drink a cup of tea, unpack my clothing, have a warm shower and change into sweatpants and a comfy t-shirt.
I am worn completely worn out.

As I fall asleep my mind is constantly repeating the image of Joe. He's embedded in my mind, and I kind of – totally – love it.

I take a large gulp of the hot coffee that's cradled in my hand and open the door. It's Joe and I his roommate Jaspar – wait no – Caspar. That's right, it's Caspar.

Joe smiles and hands me a small silver tin of biscuits. His smile lifts my heart and sends butterflies to my stomach.

"Thanks," I smile shyly back. "How are you this morning?"

"I'm very well thank you, Adeline. Oh, and I'd like you to meet Caspar, my roommate," Joe replies.

"Hi!" Caspar says in a deep, accented voice. He smiles and shakes my hand, "it's great to meet you."

"Oh hi, Caspar! Do you guys wanna come in? I could make you a coffee," I offer. They shuffle inside and sit on my only couch, stranded in my living room.

"More furniture is coming soon, probably tomorrow," I explain to them.

As I hand them their coffees, Joe says, "We can come round and help you sort out your furniture, can't we Caspar?"
Caspar nods in agreement.

I'm secretly relieved because I was wondering how I was going to do it on my own.
"Oh god, thank you!" I gush gratefully. A little bit of stress is lifted off my shoulders and I can breathe slightly easier.

We fall into easy conversation and chat for quite awhile.
It's comforting to know that I have at least two friends in this goddamn city.

I wake up with excitement bubbling in my stomach for the day. The rest of my furniture should be arriving today and Joe and Caspar are coming round to help.

I finish my breakfast and head over to the Jaspar household. As soon I step outside the crisp air hits me. I feel my nose tingle slightly in the cold. My hands are quickly shoved into the pockets of my coat. Although the chilliness is sudden and bracing, I welcome it sincerely. I've always loved the cold; the way it bites and tingles. I love how if it's cold enough, you can see your breath turn into clouds as you exhale.

I knock on their flat door and Caspar answers, his mouth a big grin.
"Hello!" He cheers in his South African accent.

"Hey, Adeline," Joe appears and I instantly flush, warmth spreading to my cheeks that were cold only a second ago.

He's looking amazing, as always. And, as always, my heart seems to flutter away.
We greet each other and chat for a bit until I hear the furniture van pulling up.

We go outside and help the men unload everything.

When the van leaves in a puff of smoke, Joe and Caspar start picking up things and putting them where I direct them.

In the late afternoon, we take a break and flop on my new, fluffy couch. I'm perching on the arm and Joe is sitting on the cushion next to me.
We can hear Caspar bustling around in the kitchen preparing some sort of food.

Suddenly, I lose my balance and topple onto Joe's lap. My face flushes crimson. God, why can't I balance like a normal person?

"Oh shit, I'm so sorry Joe," I apologise, fumbling to get off which, it turns out, is hard when you're in a position as weird as mine.

"No worries, Adeline." He laughs, pushing a strand of hair off my face. I become still, my breath catching but my heart speeding. His fingers touch my forehead for a millisecond and their warmth spreads, tingling my skin. His touch is electrifying.

I start to move again, and I clamber off him, but we're both still smiling and staring at each other. My heart is racing.

Caspar comes in with some food and drinks and we jolt back to earth, though my heart is still thudding.
Was that something? Anything? A connection?
Did Joe feel the electricity too?
So many thoughts are whirling around my head. My heart won't slow done.
THUD. THUD. THUD.
