A few weeks later…
“¡Niño!” Blake’s mother called to him.
“What?” he sighed.
“We’re going to New York, my grandmother is dying and we have to say goodbye to her. Your father is going to stay – my grandmother never liked him – to see if Dessie comes back,” his mother said, “Go tell the others!”
He told everyone and they nodded.
“Everyone! Pack up!” she clapped her hands together.
After a couple of hours getting ready, Blake’s family was off to New York.
“Dessie always wanted to be in Broadway…” Blake said, “What if she ran away there?” he looked at Carmen.
“I never knew what she liked or disliked…nor did I pay attention to her…” Carmen shrugged.
“She loved acting…I think it’s my fault she ran away,” Blake said quietly, “Ever since I joined football, I haven’t—”
Carmen put her headphones on and ignored Blake.
“Rude…” Blake growled.
“Dessie liked to act?” Jennifer asked.
He smiled and nodded.
“I don’t really care…she never liked to wear dresses. Always with the jeans and pants and skateboards…” she scoffed.
“Just because she liked a lot of things that boys do…like football…it doesn’t mean you can’t like her!” Blake growled.
“You’re weird…” Blake heard Pedro mumble.
“Thanks, I was born that way,” he snapped back.
“You talk about Dessie like she was the love of your life…”
“I treat her more of a sister than you!”
“More like a girlfriend!”
“Pedro!” their mother growled.
