Blake woke up the next day and went to the bathroom. After washing his face, he went out and saw Gabriella on the stairs in the hallway. She held her teddy bear. Tears streaked down her cheeks.
“What happened?” Blake asked in Spanish.
“She left and never came back…” she sniffed softly in Spanish.
“Who?”
“Dessie!” she wailed. Tears came down.
Blake’s eyes widened and ran to the girls’ room where Jennifer, Carmen, Dessie, and Gabriella slept. Dessie wasn’t on the bed. He went back to Gabriella.
“Where?!” he screamed in Spanish. “When?!”
“I don’t know!” she stared at him, fear in her eyes.
Blake ran to his parents’ room and yelled at them to wake up.
“Dessie’s gone!” he yelled in Spanish.
“What?!” his mom gasped.
“We have to wait, maybe she went somewhere and it might take her a long time to come back,” his dad said, “Be patient.”
The day went by and he hated how he had to wait for Dessie to come back. He knew she was gone, but his dad didn’t think so.
The next day, he called nine – one – one.
“Nine – one – one, what is your emergency?” a female voice said.
“My sister disappeared! She’s gone! She never came back!” he yelled into the phone.
“Wait, wait, who?”
“Dessie! My sister!” he yelled in the phone.
“Calm down. When was this Dessie leave?”
“Midnight, two days ago…” he said, “She hasn’t come back!”
“Where is your address? Two officers will be sent there.”
“Thank you,” he told her where he lived and hung up.
Everyone was waiting in the living room. Blake’s step – uncle paced around the room mumbling, “Stupid Dessie…stupid, stupid Dessie…”
It felt forever as Blake waited for the police officers. A knock on the door was heard and he opened it immediately. A man and woman stood there.
“I’m special agent Lucy Johnston,” the woman said, “This is special agent John Walter.”
Blake stared at the woman, her eyes were dark blue. Her blonde hair was in a ponytail. She was as tall as him.
The man was taller. His hair was light brown, brown eyes, and seemed deadly.
“I’m Blake,” he said.
“You called nine – one – one,” Lucy said.
“Yeah, my sister is gone. She left two days ago around midnight…” Blake fought back tears.
“You saw her leave?”
“My cousin did.”
Blake softly pulled Gabriella over. Lucy looked at Gabriella, “Are you sure you saw Dessie?”
Gabriella looked at Blake, confusion in her eyes. He translated to her in Spanish.
“Sí,” Gabriella responded and kept on talking.
“Yes,” Blake translated, “I called out to her. She looked at me in the dark and made me go back to bed. She had a black thing…I think it was a duffel bag…”
Lucy looked at John and he said, “That is what she is saying.”
“Does she have any friends?”
“No,” Blake said.
“Actually, Blake, she has one friend that I have seen her with,” the step uncle said.
“Name? Address?” Lucy asked.
“Jacob.” He told her Jacob’s address.
“We’ll check up on him; see if he’s home.”
“Thank you…” Blake said quietly.
He closed the door when they left.
Lucy and John knocked on the door of the home of Jacob.
A woman opened the door. A cigarette in one hand and a half – full bottle of beer was in the other. She looked at them up and down in disgust.
“What do you want?” she growled. She put the bottle of beer to her mouth and guzzled a lot of it.
“Is Jacob your son?” Lucy asked.
“I don’t know, is he?” the woman slurred, “Just kiddin’ with you – BOY, GET YOUR BUTT DOWN HERE!”
Nobody came down.
She went to his room and no one was there. She dropped the bottle of beer as she gasped.
“He’s gone!” she exclaimed.
“There was a note on the bed. It read:
Dear ‘Mom’,
I’m running away with my friend, Dessie. We both agreed to run away, because of two things:
1. You abused me.
2. Dessie was never cared about.
Well, remember the credit card that you gave me? I will max it out at the bank where you always use it. I will then throw it away.
Goodbye,
Jacob
AKA. The Boy
Lucy took the paper and read it. She turned to John, “They ran away…”
He nodded.
“I have cameras! Maybe he didn’t run away!” The mom started to cry and went to give them the tape to watch it the video.
They watched Jacob walk in front of the camera pointing at the door to go outside. He looked at it and mouthed, ‘Goodbye’.
“Do you have pictures of Jacob and Dessie?” Lucy asked her.
The mom gave them the picture of Jacob and Dessie.
“Please find him…” she said quietly.
“Call us if he comes back or if he calls you,” John gave her his card.
“I’ll call you anytime I want, you handsome boy,” she smiled.
John stayed serious as he and Lucy left.
“That woman is weird…” John mumbled outside.
Lucy laughed.
The mom closed the door and started to laugh.
"He’s GONE!” she cackled. She did a small happy dance. “This calls for a beer!” she belched.
