“What the fcuk is going on?” Ryder demands, his eyes narrowing slightly.
A muffled voice shouts something out and all five of us stiffen. It takes me a moment to remember that I had dialled Logan. He must still be on the line.
I pull my phone out of my pocket and jam it to my ears. “Lolo!” I sigh in relief.
“Are you okay? What’s going on?” Logan demands, sounding uncharacteristically like Ryder.
“Nothing. It was just a misunderstanding,” I mumble, taking a step away from the four guys.
“Like hell it was! Who was the other guy?! Did he touch you? Where are you now? And was that Ryder?!” he demands in rapid succession.
“His name’s Max. He found me asleep on the bus and offered to...can I not talk about this now?” I plead, my voice dropping.
“Faye, I was so afraid for you!” Logan breathes. I can visualise him pacing up and down.
“I know. I’ll explain everything when I get back, okay?” I bargain.
“Yeah. But was that Ryder?”
“Yeah it was,” I admit quietly.
“What the hell?!” Logan breathes angrily. “Okay...you stick with Ryder, you hear? And tell me as soon as you get into the cab. Oh! And make Ryder walk you or drive you to the taxi stand, alright? I don’t want you walking alone,” he warns severely.
“Yes dad,” I whisper, smiling slightly.
“I’m serious Faye! You know what? Let me talk to Ryder!” he instructs calmly.
“Stop worrying Logan, you’ll go grey. I’ll call you later, okay? And I promise I won’t walk anywhere on my own. I love you!” I whisper, insanely aware of four pairs of eyes boring holes into my back.
“Love you too,” Logan mutters quietly.
I disconnect the call and turn to face my audience. I know my eyes are wide and full of fear, but I don’t feel so afraid anymore. Maybe it’s because Ryder is here, or maybe it’s just because there’s a friendly face. It doesn’t matter though. I’m not going to over analyse.
“What are you doing on Edison?” Ryder asks seriously, turning to flat out glare at me.
“I don’t want to talk about it,” I mutter stubbornly.
“Do you want to tell me what the hell you’re doing here? Or perhaps you’d like to explain to me why you’re so fcuking far from home on a school day? How about telling me why you’re in that ridiculous slut outfit?!” Ryder explodes, his eyes balzing.
I shrink back slightly, not knowing how to react. You know what? I take back everything I said before, I feel just afraid now as I did before.
“Dude! You’re frightening her!” Tony mutters, taking a step towards me. “You’re okay, yes? Maxwell didn’t hurt you, did he?” he asks softly, as he approaches me.
I merely shake my head and back off again.
“Relax, nothing’s going to happen, Faye. Everything is fine. How about you come inside and have a drink...calm down a little,” Tony suggests, gesturing for me to follow him.
